Colorado Anchors Fire Back at Bloomberg: ‘We Have Plenty of Paved Roads Here’

Colorado Springs, for the record, has paved roads. You wouldn’t think that would be worthy of mention–especially on a newscast in Colorado’s second-largest market. But CBS affiliate KKTV anchors Dianne Derby and Don Ward took time out to clarify that yes, Colorado Springs, a city with a metropolitan population of nearly 700,000–and home to the Air Force Academy–is hardly an unsettled wilderness. “We have plenty of paved roads,” said Ward.

The comments came in response to an interview former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg gave to Rolling Stone, where he discussed gun legislation:

In Colorado, we got a law passed. The NRA went after two or three state Senators in a part of Colorado where I don’t think there’s roads. It’s as far rural as you can get. And, yes, they lost recall elections. I’m sorry for that. We tried to help ‘em. But the bottom line is, the law is on the books, and being enforced.

No roads, you say? That led Derby to educate Hizzoner. “Well, the mayor may not realize the recalls happened in Colorado Springs and in Pueblo. The Springs is the second-largest city in the state, while Pueblo is the seventh.”

Dianne Derby Joins KKTV From WSPA

Dianne Derby is joining the main anchor team at KKTV, the CBS-affiliate in Colorado Springs.

Derby joins KKTV from WSPA, the CBS-affiliate in Greenville, SC, where she has been a weekend anchor five years. She was also the station’s “Problem Solver” reporter.

“Dianne’s experience as a consumer investigator and evening anchor will bring tremendous value to our content and on-air presentation,” news director Liz Haltiwanger said in a statement. Read more
