KTLA Reporter: Kingsley Smith’s Departure Part of ‘Ill-Advised Dismantling’ of KTTV

KTTV_logoKTLA reporter Sam Rubin takes to Facebook to offer his version of the events that led to KTTV news director Kingsley Smith‘s resignation from the Los Angeles Fox O&O. Rubin, who covers media and entertainment for Tribune’s CW affiliate in LA, writes that “a smarter and stronger executive would have stood up to those giving the orders” as KTTV “went from feeling fun and brash, to heartless and cold”:

The real reason that Smith lost his job is that for the past two years or so he has been a willing and active participant is the ill-advised dismantling of a once popular and important news gathering organization. So after Smith followed orders, fired a ton of people at Fox 11; including very talented and popular on-air types like Mark Thompson and Dorothy Lucey; the ratings are a disaster, the news gathering abilities are destroyed; and guess who gets the blame …. the sap who followed the orders, coming from higher-ups in New York incidentally, to cut KTTV to beyond the bone.

What really matters here, and this is where “executives” always make the biggest mistake, is that television news in 2013 is a personality business. There is simply nothing more important than “feel,” how a show sincerely feels to those who watch it.  Read more

Maria Sansone Named Morning Co-Anchor at KTTV

Maria Sansone has been named co-anchor of “Good Day LA,” the morning newscast on Los Angeles Fox O&O KTTV.

Sansone moves to Los Angeles from New York City, where she was most recently a field reporter for NBC O&O WNBC. She has previously worked as a correspondent for TV Guide Network and as a VJ for MTV.

“Maria has interviewed everyone from pop culture icons and sports legends, to everyday people with compelling stories,” KTTV VP-GM Kevin Hale said in a statement. “Her contagious energy and signature style will be vital to the next generation of ‘Good Day LA.’”

Sansone appeared on the program during an on-air audition over the summer. She officially begins October 1 alongside anchor Steve Edwards, meteorologist Rick Dickert, weather anchor Maria Quiban and contributor Jillian Reynolds on “Good Day LA.” She replaces Dorothy Lucey, who left the station in May after her contract was not renewed.

LA Anchor Blogs About Firing: ‘He Said I Made His Eyes Bleed’

Dorothy Lucey, former co-anchor of the KTTV morning show “Good Day LA”, offers a surprisingly candid look at why she thinks she was let go from the Los Angeles FOX affiliate.

So many of you have asked what happened. Well it did involve blood. After 17 blissful (well mostly blissful…but that’s another blog) years at Good Day LA I got a new boss. He said I made his eyes bleed. Not the crusty yucky pink eye. New guy was saying when I spoke it made his eyes bleed. I have read that can happen after you vomit. Now I could almost see my husband saying something like that to me…after all we are married. But from a new boss…

Lucey left the station four months ago after co-anchoring the FOX morning newscast, along with Steve Edwards and Jillian Reynolds, since 1995.

For those curious, Lucey’s blog also offers a sometimes too revealing look into her life and her future plans.  Click the link to view.

>Update: When contacted for comment, a station spokesperson told TVSpy: “The revitalization at Good Day LA has been refreshing.”

Ex-KTTV Anchor Dorothy Lucey to Co-Host ‘The Young Turks’ on Current TV Tonight

Dorothy Lucey, who was ousted from KTTV last month after 17 years at the station, is co-hosting “The Young Turks” with Cenk Uygur on Current TV tonight.

Lucey will be in studio with Uygur for the full hour to talk about politics, current events and her split from the Los Angeles Fox O&O, a spokesperson for Current TV tells TVSpy.

Although Lucey was the entertainment reporter for “Good Day LA,” a source at Current says the co-hosting gig could be the start of a relationship between Lucey and the network, which continues to build out its progressive political programming. Lucey has described herself as a “liberal Christian.” Read more

Longtime KTTV News Director Jose Rios Retires

A year after being appointed to a corporate job with the Fox station group, longtime KTTV news director Jose Rios is retiring.

“Our dear friend and colleague led us to top ratings for a number of years,” KTTV anchor Jean Martirez said during the Fox O&O’s morning newscast on Thursday, announcing Rios’s retirement.  “Jose hired all of us.  I would walk on red-hot coals for this man.”

Rios spent two decades as news director at KTTV.  Last April, the Fox station group announced that he had been appointed to vice president of digital news applications, overseeing app development for all of the company’s stations. Read more

VIDEO: Jillian Reynolds Offers Teary Apology to Longtime KTTV Co-Anchor Dorothy Lucey

KTTV is shaking up its morning team, and today Jillian Reynolds offered a teary on-air apology to her longtime co-anchor Dorothy Lucey, who is departing the Los Angeles Fox O&O after 17 years.

“I’ve said some dumb, dumb things and I just want to say, I think that’s what’s made this show what it is–that you and I have not always agreed,” Reynolds, who is becoming a freelance employee with KTTV, told Lucey as they both cried (video above).  The LA Times piece Reynolds refers to is here.

Morning Anchor Dorothy Lucey Out at KTTV; Station to Hold On-Air Auditions For Her Replacement

Changes are coming to the morning newscast at KTTV. Longtime entertainment reporter Dorothy Lucey is leaving the Los Angeles Fox O&O, and co-anchor Jillian Reynolds will become a freelance employee of the station.

A spokesperson for KTTV confirmed the changes, which were first reported by Deadline Hollywood, to TVSpy. Reynolds and Lucey, along with co-anchor Steve Edwards, have helmed the show since 1995.

Station sources tell TVSpy that KTTV will hold on-air auditions for Lucey’s replacement this Summer.

Lucey, who has worked at the station since 1995, will sign off from “Good Day LA” on Friday. Her contract was not renewed. Read more

Terrence Howard Serenades KTTV Morning Team

Terrence Howard was on Los Angeles Fox O&O KTTV this morning to promote “Red Tails,” which opens today, and the actor showed up toting his guitar.

Howard serenaded Steve Edwards, Jillian Reynolds and Dorothy Lucey with a song he wrote exclusively for them. “If it comes off corny, it’s not my fault,” Howard said. By the end of it, “Good Day LA” had turned into one big sing-along (watch, starting at the 5:20 mark, above).
