Former WPIX GM Joins Hearst Television

hearst tvEric Meyrowitz, the former general manager of WPIX in New York City, is joining Hearst Television as vice president of sales. His appointment is effective March 1.

“Eric is an accomplished broadcast executive with an exceptional background and reputation in television sales,” Hearst Television president Jordan Wertlieb said in a statement.  “His station management experience and outstanding relationships throughout the advertising community make him an ideal addition to our company.”

It’s a return to Hearst for Meyrowitz, who is a former national sales manager for WBAL, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Baltimore. He has also worked as vice president and general manager of WDCW, Tribune’s CW affiliate in Washington, D.C.

Rich Graziano Named President, GM of WPIX

WPIX_logoRich Graziano has been named president and general manager of WPIX, Tribune’s CW affiliate in New York City. His appointment is effective immediately.

It is a move within Tribune for Graziano, who previously led the company’s Hartford properties. He has been president and general manager of WTIC and WCCT since 2005 and publisher, president and CEO of The Hartford Courant since 2009.

At WPIX, he replaces Eric Meyrowitz, who left the station last week.

“Rich is a skilled and innovative leader who has achieved great success in managing large-scale media operations and delivering results for viewers, advertisers and the community,” Tribune president of broadcast media Larry Wert said in a statement. “We’ve made a number of changes at WPIX, both on-the-air and in the management ranks—the station is gaining momentum. Rich is the perfect addition to lead the new team we’ve assembled.”

General Manager Eric Meyrowitz Out at WPIX

WPIX_logoWPIX vice president and general manager Eric Meyrowitz is out at Tribune’s CW affiliate in New York City. A station spokesperson confirms to TVSpy that Meyrowitz’s departure was announced this morning by Tribune local broadcasting president Larry Wert.

News of Meyrowitz’s departure was first reported by TunedIn’s Jerry Barmash.

Meyrowitz has been at the helm of WPIX for three years, moving to New York in 2011 from WDCW in Washington, D.C. A replacement has yet to be named at WPIX, according to a station spokesperson.

Jodi Applegate, Expecting a Child Through Surrogacy, to Step Down From WPIX Anchor Desk

After two years at WPIX, Jodi Applegate will step down from the anchor desk at the Tribune-owned CW affiliate in New York.

Applegate announced today that she and her husband, Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay, are expecting a daughter in January via gestational carrier. Her final broadcast will be December 19. In a statement, she said she looks forward “to returning to media in the future.”

“After years of putting my career first, I’ve decided to step back for a moment and enjoy this new role,” Applegate said. “It was a difficult decision to choose to step away from a full-time anchor position but I want to take this time to enjoy being a new mom and focus on the baby.”

Applegate is a former anchor of “Good Day New York,” the morning newscast on Fox O&O WNYW. She joined WPIX in October 2010 as the anchor of its 10 p.m. newscast. She now also anchors the 5 p.m. newscast, which was launched in 2011. Read more
