Frank Holland Leaving Chicago for Boston

holland wgn croppedFrank Holland has left Chicago CW affiliate WGN for Boston’s WCVB.

Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports Holland “is expected” to be a weekend anchor for the ABC affiliate.

Holland started at WGN in 2011 as a morning anchor. Last August, he was moved to reporter and back up anchor.

He told viewers on facebook, “I loved waking up with Chicago in the beginning and I love bringing the news to you at night now. I will always remember all the great people I met here, the great experiences and special moments.”

Before coming to WGN in 2011, Holland worked at WDIV in Detroit. He’s also worked at News12 Westchester, WMGM in Atlantic City and KTVF-KUAC in Fairbanks, AK.

WGN Announces Morning Show Expansion and Changes to On-Air Lineup

Chicago CW affiliate WGN has announced changes to its on-air lineup and an expanded morning news.

Starting September 3, Dan Ponce will join Erin McElroy as co-anchor of the WGN Morning News at 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. Before coming to WGN in 2010, Ponce was a reporter at the Chicago ABC owned station WLS.

“News, music and humor – there’s only one newscast in the city where I can do all three,” said Ponce in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be joining Chicago’s most popular morning TV team.  It’s going to be a big adjustment waking up that early, but anchoring with Erin McElroy every day will make it well worth it.” Read more

WGN Anchor Squirms as Man Hammers Nail into His Nose During Live Shot

When WGN anchors Robin Baumgarten and Frank Holland tossed to feature reporter Ana Belaval for her “Around Town” segment, they probably had little idea they would leave viewers of the Chicago CW affiliate morning show wondering which was more entertaining, seeing a man hammer a nail into his nose or listening to Baumgarten freaking out about it. Watch the video after the jump.

The segment started out with Belaval saying, “I’m holding a nail and he’s holding a hammer. This never turns out good,” while standing next to Joe Diamond, a local magician.

Viewers watched Diamond at work while hearing things like, “It’s on TV!” or “Oh God! Come on,” and “Gross! Stop!” from Baumgarten back in the studio. By the time he pulled the nail out, Baumgarten had turned around with her back to camera and even Belaval had checked out. See the video inside. Read more

WDIV’s Frank Holland Named Anchor at WGN

Frank Holland, who has been a reporter and fill-in anchor at Detroit’s WDIV for the past two years, is joining Chicago’s WGN as the morning co-anchor.

Holland will anchor the CW affiliate’s 4 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. broadcasts alongside Erin McElroy beginning September 12. WGN — which launched the early-morning broadcast about a month ago — has had Tom Negovan in the anchor chair on an interim basis while the station searched for a permanent anchor. Erin McElroy (formerly known as Erin Mendez) was assigned the 4 a.m. broadcast in April.

“We look forward to adding Frank to our AM team of personalities and we know our viewers will appreciate Frank’s energy and passion for good story-telling,” WGN news director Greg Caputo said in a statement.

Prior to joining WDIV, Holland was a general assignment reporter at News 12 Westchester in New York and WMGM in Atlantic City. He started his career in Fairbanks, AK, working at KTVF and KUAC.
