KSHB Adds Weekday Afternoon Newscast, Hires Meteorologist Kalee Dionne

Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB will add a weekday 4 p.m. newscast next month, according to Bottom Line Communications.

The newscast, which debuts April 8, will be anchored by Mark Clegg and Christa Dubill, along with chief meteorologist Gary Lezak.

“I am excited to be adding more news at a time when many stations across the country are cutting back. It reinforces our commitment to keep our viewers up to date on what’s happening in their community on the screen of their choice,” KSHB news director Carrie Hofmann said in a statement.

KSHB has also hired meteorologist Kalee Dionne (pictured), who is currently the morning meteorologist at WIAT in Birmingham, Ala. She will start in late April, according to Bottom Line.

Kansas City Meteorologist Takes Storm Reporting to New Level

Bottom Line Communications profiled Gary Lezak, chief meteorologist for Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB, during the recent snowstorm that blew through the Midwest.

Lezak told Bottom Line, “Weather is just fascinating. The passion I have for winter weather forecasting gets me so focused and energized.”

Lezak’s passion was on display for Kansas City viewers during a 24-hour period running from Monday night until Tuesday evening. His on-air odyssey began during the Monday 10:00 p.m. newscast with Lezak and his weather team giving regular updates on the storm and how it would affect the Kansas City area. continued…

Local Meteorologists to Guess What America Thinks for Charity

Four meteorologists from local TV stations around the country will get the chance to raise up to $50,000 for charity by guessing what America thinks.

Amber Sullins, chief meteorologist for Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV, Mark Johnson, chief meteorologist for Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS, George Flickinger, meteorologist for Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH and Gary Lezak, chief meteorologist for Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB will duke it out on TV game show “Let’s Ask America” next Thursday, January 31.

“Let’s Ask America” is a televised game show with four contestants playing over Skype. The contestants must predict how Americans answered questions like, “What did commuters say is the most difficult type of weather to drive in?” The show is produced by Scripps and Warner Bros. Telepictures and airs as a replacement for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in some markets. continued…

In the aftermath of Don Harman‘s tragic death, TVSpy asked friends and colleagues of Harman’s to share their stories of the beloved Kansas City meteorologist. In their own words, here are their memories:

KSHB chief meteorologist Gary Lezak:

Don Harman, Joe Lauria, Jeff Penner and I would get together every year at the end of tornado season in June. We would meet at an area restaurant after Don finished his morning shift and spend a few hours talking about weather, the behind the scenes of the business, and more. He always had us laughing from the minute we saw him. We did this almost every year until he started his family a few years ago.
