WWOR Replacing Evening Newscast With Show on New Jersey Politics, Issues

WWOR, the Fox-owned MyNetworkTV affiliate serving the New York market, is canceling its 10 p.m. newscast and replacing it with “Chasing New Jersey,” a 30-minute program focused on “issues driving conversations” in the state.

WWOR, which is licensed to and based in Secaucus, N.J., will outsource production of the show to Fairfax Productions, a production company overseen by Dennis Bianchi, the vice president and general manager of Fox-owned WTXF in Philadelphia. Bianchi, the show’s creator, will share oversight of “Chasing New Jersey” with Dianne Doctor, the recently-named station manager at WWOR.

The change will result in a handful of layoffs, although it is not immediately clear how many people will lose their jobs. WWOR’s on-air staff will be assigned to new roles, station sources say, including main anchor Brenda Blackmon who will produce and anchor news specials for WWOR. Co-anchor Harry Martin has been offered a reporter position at sister station WNYW. Meteorologist Audrey Puente and sportscaster Russ Salzberg will take on increased roles at WNYW.

“Chasing New Jersey” will originate from Trenton, N.J. and will feature Bill Spadea as “ringleader” and several reporters as “chasers.” Spadea is a former Republican nominee for U.S. Congress in New Jersey’s 12th district.

TVSpy has found filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office that show Fox Television Stations has registered for trademarks of “Chasing New Jersey,” “Chasing Seattle,” “Chasing Texas, “Chasing Florida,” “Chasing San Francisco, “Chasing Charlotte,” and “Chasing America.” Except for Seattle and San Fransisco, Fox has an O&O in each area.

Dave Price Named Morning Anchor at WNYW; Greg Kelly Shifts to Evenings

Beginning next Monday, Rosanna Scotto will have a new co-anchor on “Good Day New York”: Dave Price (left), a former WNYW weathercaster, is returning to the Fox O&O.

Price’s hire sets a cascade of changes to WNYW’s newscasts into motion. Greg Kelly (right), Scotto’s current co-anchor, will move to evenings, anchoring the 6 p.m. newscast solo and 10 p.m. newscast with Dari Alexander. Kelly replaces Ernie Anastos at 10 p.m. and Harry Martin at 6 p.m.

Anastos’ time at the anchor desk will be reduced, although the station will add more “Positively Ernie” specials to its lineup beginning later this year. He will remain in his current role on the 5 p.m. newscast. Martin will continue as an anchor on WNYW sister station WWOR, and will focus on political reporting ahead of the election, a WNYW spokesperson tells TVSpy. Read more

WWOR Kicks Off Yearlong ‘Hometown Heroes’ Series

In honor of Memorial Day weekend, News Corp.-owned WWOR, headquartered in Secaucus, NJ, is kicking off a yearlong series honoring marines, soldiers and other military personnel in the Tri-State area (video above).

The “Hometown Heroes” series will air on the MyNetworkTV-affiliate’s 10 p.m. newscast, anchored by Brenda Blackmon and Harry Martin. Beginning this weekend and continuing through Memorial Day of 2013, the station will spotlight a different local person in the military each night.

WWOR Hires Matt Alvarez as Full-Time Reporter

Matt Alvarez has been hired as a full-time reporter at WWOR, the MyNetworkTV affiliate in Seacaucus.

Alvarez has been freelancing at WWOR and sister station WNYW since April 2010. He will be a general assignment reporter on WWOR’s 10 p.m. newscast, which is anchored by Brenda Blackmon and Harry Martin.

“Matt has done a stellar job on reporting relevant issues affecting tri-state area residents and we are thrilled to offer him this opportunity,” WWOR vice president and news director Jim Driscoll said in a statement.

Prior to joining WWOR, Alvarez was a reporter for WCMH in Columbus, OH and KJCT in Grand Junction, CO.

MyNetworkTV Flagship WWOR Returns News to 10

WWOR, the flagship station of the MyNetworkTV, is returning local news to the 10 o’clock hour. The move comes two years after the New Jersey station dumped its 1-hour 10 p.m. newscast in favor of an 11 p.m. half hour.

The new 10 p.m. newscast will launch on June 27th, according to the Daily News. It will feature longtime WWOR anchors Harry Martin and Brenda Blackmon (right) along with meteorologist Audrey Puente and sports anchor Russ Salzberg.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” Martin tells FishbowlNY. “Lew Leone, our general manger, said there’s an audience that really wants to watch us at that time.”

In addition to anchoring the news for WWOR, Martin appears on sister station WNYW. He says that his duties there will remain in tact as WWOR shuffles its schedule. Read more at FishbowlNY
