KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo fell victim to what’s becoming a common prank suffered upon local stations reading birthday wishes on-air. Pranksters have picked up on the practice and send in names that look real on paper, but when said aloud can push FCC obscenity rules.

This time, after DiCarlo wished “Hugh Janus” a happy birthday, an alert Chris Schauble couldn’t hold back his laughter alerting the news team something was amiss. After much discussion and giggling Schauble told DiCarlo, “Uh, I think it’s one of those trick names and you fell for it.”

“I got punked. I basically got punked,” said DiCarlo. “Hopefully there’s not a ten-year-old, really, with that name out there.”

By now, Los Angeles viewers must be used to seeing the KTLA morning team doing crazy things on-air: throwing a fit, making fun of an intern, hanging out with Hooters Girls, dressing up as Cupid.  And now “getting an impromptu haircut” can be added to the list.

On Monday morning, anchor Megan Henderson had plastic stuck in her hair following a curling iron mishap so meteorologist Henry DiCarlo grabbed a scissors and offered to help out (video above).

KTLA invited a couple of Hooters girls to be a part of the station’s morning newscast on Wednesday.

Meteorologist Henry DiCarlo introduced the girls, who are set to compete in a local swimsuit competition, during the 6 o’clock hour, as anchors Megan Henderson and Chris Schauble snacked on wings from the restaurant. Later in the show, the girls stripped down to their swimsuits and joined weathercaster Mark Kriski as he promoted their competition.

This isn’t the first time KTLA has invited scantily clad women onto its morning show. During February sweeps, the station had lingerie models on to accompany DiCarlo for a weather update.

KTLA began its morning show on Thursday without one of its anchors.

Megan Henderson was conspicuously absent from the opening seconds of KTLA’s 4:00 a.m. newscast, leading co-anchor Chris Schauble to impersonate her until she arrived in the studio.

Henderson explained that someone had screwed up and told her “two minutes, ten seconds ago.”  It was an excuse that Schauble and meteorologist Henry DiCarlo weren’t totally buying (video above).

In a weather update that began as a Valentine’s Day joke and ended as an advertisement for lingerie store Frederick’s of Hollywood, KTLA invited two lingerie models on to do the weather Tuesday morning (video above).

Dressed as cupid, AMS-certified meteorologist Henry DiCarlo handed his green screen over to the buxom models.

“I have two young boys at home and this is not how they want to picture their father,” DiCarlo said, wearing red tights and wings.

Facing an onslaught of media coverage after Henry DiCarlo‘s “fit” went viral earlier this week, the KTLA meteorologist and his producer addressed his behavior on yesterday’s morning newscast. DiCarlo joked he was hungry and he hadn’t had any coffee, and said “all kinds of things were going on” in his life at that moment, before walking it back to an almost-apology:

DiCarlo: It doesn’t matter what the circumstances were. It wasn’t a pretty sight for me to act like that. And I get that. But personally — you guys have seen much worse from me. So I don’t think it was that bad.

KTLA anchor Megan Henderson: If you’re a regular watcher of our show, especially during those hours, this happens on a daily basis. Maybe to that extent, but it is kind of — it’s a little bit of our shtick.

 

It started last Wednesday, when audio of KTLA reporter Rich Demuro asking an intern for a cup of coffee accidentally aired at the top of a report on cell phone bans. It was a common-enough mistake (remember this?), but the Los Angeles station handled it in a very uncommon way.

Instead of ignoring the gaffe, KTLA staffers have turned “Irene the Coffee Intern” into a running joke, featuring her delivering coffee on-air to KTLA anchors and reporters (watch above). Read more

Weather is clearly important to KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo, so when something else cuts in to his allotted forecast time, he’s probably going to be upset.

“When you send a weatherman out to do the weather, but you’re also sending him to do a story, you might want to give him a little extra time,” DiCarlo said testily upon finding out there wasn’t time for the forecast (watch above). “But that’s just me.”
