Cox Names New GM for Memphis Station

whbq_logoThe Memphis FOX station that recently went from FOX to Cox ownership has a new GM. Paul Briggs was named by Cox Media Group as VP and GM of WHBQ effective immediately.

Briggs was the general sales manager at Cox’s Charlotte, N.C. ABC affiliate WSOC.

“We are thrilled that we can tap such phenomenal internal talent like Paul for this important leadership position at one of our newest TV brands,” Cox EVP of Television Jane Williams said in a statement. “Paul will play a pivotal role in leading the professionals at WHBQ-TV and to continue informing, inspiring, entertaining and improving the Memphis community.”

Briggs replaces former GM John Koski.

Cox ‘Welcomes New TV Stations in Boston, Memphis’

cox_media_group_304Cox Media Group sent out a press release today welcoming the employees of its two newest stations and updating them on management changes.

Cox acquired WHBQ in Memphis and WFXT in Boston from FOX in exchange for KTVU in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In what is essentially a GM swap, KTVU GM Tom Raponi will follow the station group to Boston, becoming the new GM of WFXT. FOX announced yesterday WFXT GM Gregg Kelley will follow FOX to KTVU and replace Raponi. John Koski will stay on as GM of WHBQ.

“Countless hours of hard work have taken place over the last few months to prepare for today, and I want to thank everyone at Cox Media Group, in Boston and in Memphis who made today a reality,” Jane Williams, CMG’s EVP of Television said in a statement. “We look forward to supporting these new stations as they continue playing key roles in their communities; providing vital news, information and entertainment to their audiences; and offering targeted sales solutions to their clients.”

Cox Names New Head of TV and new VP of News & Marketing

Cox Media Group has named Jane Williams executive vice president of television effective immediately. CMG also named Marian Pittman vice president of news and marketing for television. Pittman will report to Williams.

Williams, who oversees all of CMG’s television stations, was named senior vice president of television in 2012. Before that she was the publisher of the Cox owned Austin American-Statesman. She started her television career at WSB in Atlanta in 1988.  In 2007, she was promoted to VP of Sales for Cox Television and became CMG’s VP of Sales in 2009.

Williams welcomed Pittman by saying, “We are thrilled to have Marian lead our Television News and Marketing efforts.” Williams added, “She is the consummate news professional and has been an integral leader in one of the most successful, legendary local news operations in the country at Atlanta’s WSB-TV and will now work with all of our Television properties as we build for the future in a rapidly changing media environment.”

Most recently Pittman was the station manager for WSB. During her 25 year career in media, she has worked at WFTV in Orlando, WSOC in Charlotte and WHIO in Dayton, OH.
