Local Morning Shows Beating Network Shows in Largest Markets

AM shows_570

The morning show battles aren’t just between ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today Show anymore. TVNewsCheck reports a smaller, leaner, local opponent has entered the arena.

In March, on FOX owned station WNYW “Good Day New York” beat GMA with a 1.425 rating among 25-54 year-olds compared to GMA’s 1.421. Chicago CW affiliate WGN and Los Angeles CW affiliate KTLA also beat both GMA and Today in mornings by a larger margin.

Circling above New York on a frigid morning two weeks ago, WNYW’s helicopter spotted a lone surfer along the coast of Long Island and fed the images to the Fox O&O’s Good Day New York. As the surfer struggled to catch a wave, co-hosts Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto provided rather snarky commentary.

The next day, they featured the surfer, Doug Bard, on the four-hour morning show to learn about cold-weather surfing. They received a bar of Sex Wax (look it up) from him and Bard got a chance to do the weather in front of the green screen.

“In all these cases, the shows are anchored by extremely likeable, fun, accessible talent that isn’t afraid to make fun of themselves,” TV Guide Los Angeles Bureau Chief Michael Schneider told TVNewsCheck. “The anchors on these local shows just feel more real.” Read more

Police Investigate White Powder Sent to Two Los Angeles Stations

A suspicious white powder was sent to both Los Angeles FOX owned station KTTV and Tribune’s CW affiliate KTLA.

KTLA reported firefighters and the FBI are on the scene after the powder was discovered in an envelope addressed to KTLA around 11:00 a.m.

The station said a Fire Department test for anthrax came back negative and added, “Firefighters could not detail what they had found until a battalion chief arrived on scene, but first responders were seen wearing gas masks before descending into the basement mailroom.”

KTLA said LA Police told them they were also on the scene at KTTV. We’ve asked FOX for more details. We will update when we know more.

KTLA Hires Five, Including Courtney Friel and Jillian Barberie

KTLA news director Jason Ball has announced five new hires, our sister site FishbowlLA reports. Courtney Friel (pictured), Jillian Barberie, Steve Kuzj, Kimberly Cheng and Olsen Ebright are all joining the Los Angeles CW affiliate.

Friel and Barberie both most recently worked at rival KTTV, the Fox O&O in Los Angeles. Friel, an entertainment reporter, signed off in February after her contract was not renewed. Barberie, a co-anchor of “Good Day LA,” left KTTV in September.

FishbowlLA reports that Barberie will host an entertainment news program, “The Hollywood Mix,” which will debut in June. Friel will contribute as an anchor and reporter.

Kuzj and Cheng both come from KNXV, the ABC affiliate in Phoenix. Ebright comes from rival KNBC, where he has been the social media lead and content producer since 2007.
