Wichita Stations Break Into Programming to Cover Plane Crash

After a plane crashed at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita, Kansas, local stations broke into regular programming to give viewers updates about the crash.

CBS affiliate KWCH was first on air, breaking into The Price is Right at 10:04 a.m.  Scott Evans reported the station had confirmed with police that a plane had crashed into the Flight Safety building at the airport. The station then went quickly to a live phoner with a construction worker who didn’t witness the crash, but said he “heard a big boom” and saw the flames and smoke.

NBC affiliate KSNW broke into the Today show about a minute later. Over a shot of the airport from the tower cam, the station told viewers a plane had crashed into a two story building, one person was in critical condition and emergency crews were on the scene.

ABC affiliate KAKE broke into The View at 10:05. Jemelle Holopirek reported a King Air Jet had crashed on top of the Flight Safety building at the airport. Wichita Police told KAKE, 10 people are trapped in the building, but had no information about the people aboard the plane.

FOX affiliate KSAS was still running an episode of Judge Mathis as of this writing.

KAKE Shuffles Morning and Evening Anchors, Welcomes New Meteorologist

Viewers of Gray Television’s KAKE might be forgiven if it takes them a little time to remember the changes taking place at the Wichita ABC affiliate.

Anchor Mike Iuen and meteorologist Ben Pringle have been moved from the morning shift to weekend evenings. Iuen replaces Larry Hatteberg. Hatteberg, who moved to weekdays to replace Jeff Herndon who recently left for Chicago’s WFLD, told TVSpy starting this week he’ll anchor the 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts.

The station also welcomed new meteorologist Frank Waugh, who returns to his home state of Kansas by way of Gray’s South Bend, IN, station WNDU. Waugh joins Jemelle Holopirek who remains on the mornings.

Iuen told TVSpy, KAKE Management’s response to our question about why he was being moved was this: “We are expanding newscasts and with the Sunday 10 pm show being the most watched show of the week, we need a strong team there, hence Mike and Ben.”
