WEYI Says Goodbye to Morning Anchor Elizabeth MacFarland

Flint, MI, NBC affiliate WEYI said goodbye to morning anchor Elizabeth MacFarland after six years with the station.

“I have worked with nine news anchors in my career,” MacFarland’s co-anchor Joel Feick said in a statement. “None of them worked as hard or made me laugh as much as her.”

MacFarland is getting out of broadcasting. She has taken a job with non-profit Wellspring Lutheran Services working with seniors, families and children.

“I will miss the hustle and bustle of daily news, live television and the sense of urgency it gave me everyday,” MacFarland said. “I covered many day-to-day stories, but the stories most near and dear to my heart are the stories that made people at home smile a little, laugh a lot or shed a tear.” Read more

Longtime WJRT Anchor Bill Harris Joins Rival WEYI

Longtime WJRT anchor Bill Harris is joining crosstown rival WEYI.

“Grab your remotes!” NBC-affiliate WEYI exclaimed, announcing the move.  “The face of Mid-Michigan news hasn’t changed, but the channel has.”

Harris spent over three decades anchoring the news for WJRT before being cut loose last spring.  He returned to the station to do occasional special reports last year, but officially said goodbye in December.

Harris will anchor WEYI’s 6 p.m. newscast.  His first day is set for January 30th. Read more

6 Months After Being Cut Loose at WJRT, Joel Feick Joins WEYI As Morning Anchor

Joel Feick, a veteran anchor who was fired from Flint-ABC affiliate WJRT in April after 27 years, has joined rival station WEYI.

“I am excited to be working for a team that wants me and to get back to telling stories again,” Feick said in a statement. “It’s what I love to do.”

Feick was a casualty of station-wide downsizing after WJRT was acquired by SJL Broadcasting. He was weekend anchor at WJRT;  WEYI news director Kathy Reynolds calls mornings “a natural next step for him.”

Feick’s first broadcast was this morning. According to WEYI’s statement, he will be the newscast’s primary anchor, surrounded by an “ensemble cast.” Read more

Heads Continue to Roll at WJRT Under New Owner

New owner SJL Broadcasting continues to clean house at Flint’s WJRT.

After losing its general manager and longtime news director as SJL assumed control of the ABC-affiliate last Friday, WJRT is now saying Goodbye to two anchors who have been the face of the station for decades.

New WJRT GM Peter Veto has decided to dump Bill Harris (right), who has been with the station for over three decades and who most recently anchored WJRT’s 5, 6, and 11 p.m. newscasts, as well as Joel Feick (far right), a weekend anchor who has been with the station since 1983.

“Quite frankly, I don’t know much about it, because it’s still fresh, other than that my services are no longer needed,” Harris told The Flint Journal in confirming his dismissal. Read more
