Wilhot’s co-anchor, John Becker, surprised her with a tribute video during a newscast last week (video above). “I’m speechless, I really am,” Wilhot said after seeing the video. “To see all those faces from the past, and the present and certainly the future. I’m a blessed person.”

WBIR Staffers Come to Defense of Former News Director Bill Shory

Although Bill Shory has declined to go on the record about his departure from WBIR, current and former staffers of the Knoxville NBC-affiliate are speaking out on his behalf.

In a recent blog post, Katie Granju, a former online producer at WBIR, compiled statements from a handful of people who worked closely with Shory during his tenure as the station’s news director.

“In his eight years as news director, Bill led the newsroom through great ratings successes, sweeping industry changes, heartfelt community tributes and tough investigative projects,” Granju wrote.  “Through it all, he was a wonderful boss.” Read more

Knoxville’s WBIR Introduces New HD Set

Knoxville’s WBIR transitioned to HD recently and here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the NBC-affiliate’s gleaming new set, with anchor John Becker acting as tour guide.

The station has received plenty of viewer feedback since unveiling the new set and news director Bill Shory responded to the letters and online comments this week in a blog post.

“The feedback that you’re giving us right now will guide us as we continue to improve our look,” writes Shory. “After all, this isn’t about what we want… it’s about what you want.”

Knoxville’s WBIR and WTNZ Begin First Phase of Production Partnership

The first stage of the recently announced partnership between Knoxville NBC-affiliate WBIR and Fox-affiliate WTNZ begins this week.

Earlier this month, Raycom Media-owned WTNZ announced that WBIR, which is owned by Gannett, would begin producing its newscasts as part of the station’s strategy to cost-effectively expand its local news programming and eventually begin broadcasting in HD.

WTNZ is debuting its new, WBIR-produced 10 p.m. newscast today anchored by Robin Wilhoit and John Becker (right), who will continue helming WBIR’s 11 p.m. newscast as well.

WTNZ’s 10 p.m. newscast will expand to an hour in “late May or early June,” WBIR news director Bill Shory told the Knoxville News Sentinel. At that point, Beth Haynes, who currently hosts WBIR’s 4 p.m. news and lifestyle show, will rotate in with Wilhoit and Becker at 10 p.m.

The other elements of the partnership–HD broadcasting and a new, two-hour morning newscast–are set to launch by the end of June.
