Fortney began his television career at WTAP as the weeknight weatherman in 1998. He was named primary anchor at the NBC-affiliate in 1994, a post he held for two years before leaving in 1996 to join Ohio News Network.
“We are very pleased that John is coming back to WTAP,” Roger Sheppard, station vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “He worked very hard when he was here and did some great reporting. Flowers, who has been with the joint CBS-affiliate since November 2010, will work alongside current anchor John Fortney, effectively replacing Serese Cole, who left the station earlier this summer to join WOWT in Omaha.
Flowers has anchored KOLN-KGIN’s “Nebraska Central News“–a 9 p.m. newscast that airs on the stations’ MyTV digital subchannel–since its debut last December.
“This is a great opportunity to continue to serve Nebraska viewers,” she said of her move to 5, 6, and 10, which will bring her from Grand Island to Lincoln. “I get to work with the same great team of people, but in a different city.”
Sara Geake, who has worked as a reporter for KGIN since 2006, replaces Flowers as “NCN” anchor.
