WLS Surveys Viewers About Weather Team

jerry taft wlsWLS, the ABC owned station in Chicago, is enlisting a “select group of Chicago area viewers to aid in formulating a long-range weather plan” for after longtime meteorologist Jerry Taft (pictured) retires, media reporter Robert Feder reports:

One of the participants in the ongoing research study shared with me a copy of the online survey, which includes such questions as: “If Jerry Taft were no longer one of the weathercasters on ABC 7 News – WLS, how much more or less often would you watch the local news on ABC 7 News – WLS?”

Another question asks: “If Tracy Butler were no longer one of the weathercasters on ABC 7 News – WLS, how much more or less often would you watch the local news on ABC 7 News – WLS between 4:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.?”

[...] “We’re always looking for ways to improve our product and serve our viewers,” [WLS general manager John] Idler told me Monday. “It’s standard to ask multidimensional questions so we can fully understand our viewers’ affinity for the way we keep them informed.”

Chicago Station Plans Return to ‘Eyewitness News’ Brand

wls_304Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports ABC owned Chicago station WLS will once again brand itself as “Eyewitness News.”

Feder said the “Eyewitness News” name ran from 1969 until 1996 on WLS. Today, WABC in New York, KABC in Los Angeles, KTRK in Houston and WTVD in Raleigh-Durham use the brand.

WLS general manager John Idler told Feder, “The reality is ['Eyewitness News'] still has a very strong identity with this station — even though it was dropped a number of years ago. It’s still very important to our viewers, and they associate it with ABC 7. That’s principally why we’re bringing it back.”

Idler emphasized that the goal isn’t to go retro. “The execution of this is going to be very contemporary,” he said. “It is not going to be a look back to ‘Eyewitness News.’ It is going to be a look forward to what ‘Eyewitness News’ means to viewers today.” Read more

WLS Takes Morning Ratings Hit After Recent Schedule Changes

When Chicago’s WLS dropped its 11:00 a.m. newscast to make room for “Live with Kelly and Michael,” it may have done the right thing for parent company Disney but the wrong thing for its viewers.

Robert Feder reports the station’s 25 year run of being number one in the mornings may be coming to an end for the ABC owned station.

Since the new schedule debuted Sept. 2, according to Nielsen figures, ABC 7′s overall ratings are down 13 percent at 9 a.m., 29 percent at 10 a.m. (with ABC’s “The View”), and 36 percent at 11 a.m. In the 25-to-54 adult demo, ratings are down 11 percent at 9 a.m., 41 percent at 10 a.m. and 46 percent at 11 a.m.

Feder also said “ABC7 News This Morning” has dropped out of the top spot from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. weekdays in overall audience and in adults 25-54. Read more

WLS Adds ‘Live With Kelly and Michael,’ Drops 11 a.m. Newscast

WLS, the ABC O&O in Chicago, is dropping its 11 a.m. newscast after more than 20 years this fall, according to Chicago media reporter Robert Feder.

The cancellation is because WLS has acquired the syndicated “Live With Kelly and Michael,” which has previously aired in Chicago on CW affiliate WGN. Beginning in the fall, WLS will air “Live” at 9 a.m. The locally produced “Windy City Live” will shift to 11 a.m., displacing the newscast, which has been anchored by Linda Yu and Sylvia Perez since its 1992 debut.

WLS will launch a web-only newscast that will air at noon, “ABC 7 to Go,” WLS president and general manager John Idler said.

“ABC 7 News is one of our greatest strengths and we’re parlaying that resource to meet the changing needs of our audience with ‘ABC 7 to Go,’ ” Idler said in a statement. “There’s no question ‘Windy City Live’ has also become a dynamic part of Chicago – creating a buzz, attracting a loyal following and keeping morning viewers entertained. By incorporating the resources and reach of ABC 7 News, ‘Windy City Live’ will give viewers another reason to watch.”

Feder reports that the Tribune Broadcasting-owned WGN will replace “Live” with a sixth hour of the morning newscast.

Citing ‘Economic Challenges Facing Our Industry,’ WLS Cancels ’190 North’

WLS is pulling the plug on “190 North,” a weekly lifestyle and entertainment show that has aired on the Chicago ABC O&O for 14 years.

WLS general manager John Idler said “economic challenges facing our industry” were behind the decision. Idler told Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder he envisions the franchise as a series of quarterly specials going forward.

“I think we can probably add that to some of the franchises we have on the air now,” Idler said. “It would give us the opportunity to celebrate some of those things that ’190 North’ has been known for in the community.”

Janet Davies (pictured), who has been the host and executive producer of the show since 1998, is currently in talks with the station about her future role, Feder reports. The show’s three freelance contributors — Doug Banks, Mark Nilsson and Eva Saha — will be leaving the station.

WLS Names Curtis Miles VP of Creative Services

Curtis Miles will join Chicago ABC O&O, WLS, as vice president of creative services and local programming.

Miles, who replaces former creative services VP Tom Hebel, comes to WLS from ABC owned WTVD in Raleigh-Durham, NC.  WLS general manager John Idler came to WLS from WTVD in June.

“Curtis has been a tremendous asset for WTVD and we are excited to welcome him to the ABC 7 team,” said Idler. “I’ve worked with Curtis for many years and have been able to observe first-hand his outstanding creative instincts, his keen ability to advance a television stations brand and his leadership within the station.”

Tom Hebel Out at Chicago’s WLS

TimeOut Chicago’s Robert Feder reports Tom Hebel, VP of programming and creative services and a 15-year veteran of ABC O&O WLS, is leaving the station. The move comes four months after the station got a new GM in John Idler.

“We thank Tom for his many years of contribution and service to our station,” Idler said. “We wish him well as he moves forward in the next chapter of his career.” Feder writes:

Although ABC 7 has long led the market in ratings and revenue, it has suffered in recent years from lackluster marketing — particularly in on-air promotion, according to insiders. In addition to changes in its daytime program lineup and audience erosion to new media, the station faces rejuvenated competition from CBS 2, NBC 5 and Tribune-owned WGN.

Caroline Foy Welch Named President-GM of WTVD

Caroline Foy Welch has been appointed president and general manager of WTVD in Raleigh-Durham, effective immediately, the ABC O&O announced today.

Welch has worked at WPVI, the ABC O&O in Philadelphia, since 1992. Most recently, she was the station’s vice president of programming.

“Caroline Welch’s proven commitment to excellence in local TV programming, along with the wide-ranging expertise she’s gained working closely with management and staff across-the-board at WPVI-TV, made her the ideal choice for the top post at WTVD-TV,” Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC O&Os, said in a statement. New WLS GM: “The First Thing I’m Going to Do Is Reconnect with Everybody”

John Idler, who was named president and general manager of Chicago ABC O&O WLS earlier this week, hopes to do a lot of listening in his first days on the job.

“The first thing I’m going to do is to reconnect with everybody in the building and figure out where the departments are strategically,” Idler told Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder recently.  “Beyond that, as far as any long-terms plans or specific goals for the station, it’s way too early to talk about them.”

Idler joined WLS as an account executive in 1998 and served as vice president and general sales manager at the station before leaving to run WTVD, the ABC O&O in Raleigh-Durham. Read more
