Viewers Question Reporter After She Asks If It’s OK for President to Watch Basketball Game

KATU reporter Anna Canzano stirred up some negative viewer reaction when she used social media to question whether it was appropriate for President Barack Obama to watch a college basketball game with his family.

The reporter for the Portland, OR, ABC affiliate wrote roughly the same question on both the KATU facebook page, her company facebook page and her company twitter feed,

A large majority of the responses were in the president’s favor and many wondered why Canzano was asking the question at all. One responder on twitter asked Canzano, “what is wrong with you?” Read more

David Praga Upped to VP of Fisher Communications

David Praga has been promoted to vice president of Fisher Communications. In his new role, Praga will continue to serve as GM of KIMA-KEPR-KUNW in Yakima and KLEW in Lewiston.

“David is a strong, motivating leader who understands the important role television stations play in their local communities,” John Tamerlano, SVP of Fisher regional television, said in a statement.

Praga began his career at KEPR two decades ago as a sales assistant and has held various positions at the station, including operations director, account executive and station manager. He has been general manager at the stations since March 2011.

Don Pratt Tapped as VP-GM of Boise’s KBOI-KYUU

Don Pratt is stepping into the role of vice president and general manager at KBOI-KYUU, the Fisher Communications duopoly in Boise.

Pratt comes from the Fisher-owned station in Portland, ABC-affiliate KATU, where he has been the vice president and news director since 2006. Prior to that, he worked at WHDH in Boston, WCSC in Charleston and KGO in San Francisco.

“We’ve been very pleased with Don’s performance at KATU, where he took our news product to its next level, establishing the strongest news brand in the market,” said KATU general manager John Tamerlano, who is also the SVP of Fisher Regional Television. Read more

KATU Camera Stolen at Occupy Demonstration

A KATU news crew had a camera stolen while covering an Occupy Portland demonstration this week.

On Monday, Occupy protestors gathered at the Port of Portland, shutting down three of its four terminals.  Amid the demonstration, police arrested a handful of unruly people, including one man who stole a pick-up truck from the scene of a car crash and used it to transport a group on their way to the port.

While details of the theft are scarce, KATU general manager John Tamerlano told TVSpy that the station is working with the Portland police department to recover the stolen equipment, which has been valued at around $25,000. Read more
