New President Changes Station Group Name to ‘NBC Owned Television Stations’

In an apparent effort to emphasize the unique value of the company’s TV stations, newly appointed NBC station group president Valari Staab is rebranding her division as NBC Owned Television Stations.

“This new name serves as a reminder to all of us that this division is first and foremost defined by 10 great television stations serving 10 very dynamic and diverse communities,” Staab told employees in a memo obtained by Broadcasting & Cable. “We are no longer referring to our stations as ‘owned and operated’ because while the stations are owned by NBC, they are operated by the local management team of each station. Our markets are separate and distinct, and the people running the stations are in the best position to serve the needs of their communities each and every day.”

The new name is a departure from the inclusive multi-screen thinking of Staab’s predecessor John Wallace, who changed the unit’s name to “NBC Local Media” in 2007. Despite the TV-centric name change, though, Staab says that the division will remain “committed to continuing our focus on distributing the content we produce across multiple platforms to connect with our audience wherever they want us, whenever they want us and however they want us.”

NBC’s Local Stations Look to Partner with Non-Profit News Organizations

Based on the successful relationship between KNSD-TV and voiceofsandiego.org, NBCUniversal is looking for non-profit news partners for at least five of its other nine owned and operated stations.

“We’re looking for top-notch, non-profit news organizations that can work cooperatively with our local NBC news teams to create unique content for both their own platforms and our news platforms,” says John Wallace, President of NBC Local Media.

Wallace is “looking for outlets that represent a range of diverse communities and viewpoints in the markets they serve.”

NBC owns stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Washington, DC, and Hartford-New Haven.

NBC Launching Three Local 24-Hour Channels

Making good on a promise made to the FCC during merger talks, Comcast-NBC Universal is launching three 24-hour news channels at NBC O&Os in Miami, Dallas, and California.

In pitching the merger to the FCC, the two companies said that NBC Local Media would add 1,000 additional hours of local news per year and the new 24/7 channels will deliver this extra coverage.

“We’re happy to announce that we’ve begun to fulfill the localism commitment we made on the day we announced our transaction,” said NBC Local Media president John Wallace. “These new offerings continue our ongoing effort to expand our local news and information programming in our ten O&O markets.”

Miami’s WTVJ and Dallas’s KXAS will launch “Nonstop” digital subchannels in their respective markets, while LA’s KNBC, San Francisco’s KNTV, and San Diego’s KNSD will work together to debut a 24-hour channel covering California.

NBC Local Media Names ABC Veteran President

Valari Dobson Staab, currently the general manager of ABC O&O KGO, has been appointed president of NBC Local Media group, replacing John Wallace, who has been promoted to NBCUniversal Media Works, a unit that oversees the company’s technology and studio operations in addition to its real estate holdings.

Staab, who has been KGO’s GM since 2002, was considered a frontrunner to replace Walter Liss as president of ABC O&Os last year. That job ended up going to WABC’s Rebecca Campbell, prompting Staab to apparently look for job opportunities outside of the ABC stations group, where she has worked for 15 years.

“We’re thrilled to have an executive of Valari’s caliber join our Local Media group,” said NBC Broadcasting chairman Ted Harbert, in announcing the move. “Throughout her career in local television she’s had tremendous success growing the businesses she’s worked for and placing a premium on creating quality local news that resonates with viewers.” Read more

GMs of NBC O&Os Meet with Comcast Executives

The general managers of NBC O&Os are meeting with Comcast executives today in San Diego to discuss what the Comcast-NBCUniversal deal means for local stations.

The meeting is being run by John Wallace, the head of NBC Local Media, and attended by the Comcast-appointed chairman of NBC Broadcasting, Ted Harbert, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

The NBC O&Os regularly meet twice a year to discuss various issues facing their stations. This week’s conference, though, is especially significant now that NBC is a part of cable giant Comcast.

One NBC GM told B&C that a major topic of conversation will be how NBC O&Os can collaborate with Comcast entities such as its regional SportsNet channels.
