KNBC Keeps Ann Curry News a Secret During Morning Show

Los Angeles NBC O&O KNBC kept the news of Ann Curry‘s departure from the “Today” show a secret during its morning newscast Thursday.

Unlike its NBC sister stations on the West Coast, KNTV and KNSD, who both reported on Curry’s departure, KNBC decided not to mention the news before the start of “Today.”

Curry’s teary announcement came around 8:50 a.m. ET so NBC stations on the West Coast had to decide whether or not they were going to break the news on their shows. Read more

KNTV Set to Launch 11 a.m. Newscast Next Week

NBC owned-and-operated KNTV is launching the second 11 a.m. newscast in the San Francisco market on September 19.

“This expansion of NBC Bay Area news allows us to serve our Bay Area viewers with more of the high-quality international, national and local coverage they’ve come to expect from us,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said in a statement.

The newscast, which will air following NBC’s “Today” show, will be anchored by Jon Kelley and Marla Tellez. Kelley is currently the station’s morning anchor; Tellez is a reporter and fill-in anchor on the same broadcast. Read more

KNTV Adds 2 Veteran Anchors To News Team

KNTV has hired two new anchors to join its news team — veteran journalists Jon Kelley and Janelle Wang.

Kelley is a 15-year veteran of the television business. He has a broadcast career that includes time at Chicago’s WMAQ, Kansas City’s WDAF and Fox Sports. Kelly will join the NBC O&O as co-anchor of the morning show alongside Laura Garcia-Cannon.

Wang has worked in the San Francisco market for the last eight years as the host of “The View from the Bay,” a one-hour talk show on ABC O&O KGO. She will anchor KNTV’s 5 p.m. broadcast with Raj Mathai.

“We’re very happy to add these two strong, experienced journalists to our newsroom,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said. The two anchors will start at the San Francisco station later this month.
