The fire began on the second floor of the station’s building around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, during the morning newscast. The building was evacuated and programming went to black. WOAI anchors reported on the fire for sister station KABB, the San Antonio Fox affiliate.

WOAI’s programming resumed around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. With the second floor of the building still closed, the station has set up a temporary news set in the station’s parking lot.

“At approximately 5:00 a.m. a fire alarm was triggered at WOAI-TV, and the building was evacuated. Fire units arrived shortly thereafter. The fire was contained to second floor offices. We expect to have electricity restored to the building by noon, and we anticipate having WOAI-TV on the air later this afternoon,” WOAI general manager John Seabers said in a statement. “We are grateful no one was injured.”

In the station’s slideshow of the fire, flames can be seen in the second floor window of the WOAI building. WOAI reporters and anchors did live reports from the scene on Fox affiliate KABB, which is also owned by WOAI parent company Sinclair Broadcasting.

“Karen’s courage in her battle inspired us all,” the station said in a statement. “She loved each of her Fox San Antonio viewers.”

Martinez was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and has raised awareness of the disease and its treatments on the air for the past four years. In November, the anchor underwent radioembolization treatments to treat the cancer, which had spread to her liver.

Andy Cunningham

Cunningham moves to Louisiana from Kentucky, where he has been a general assignment reporter at WKYT in Lexington since March. This is Cunningham’s second stint at the station. He previously worked there from 2007-09.

Cunningham has also been a reporter at KABB in San Antonio, KFXA in Cedar Rapids and KLJB in Davenport, Iowa.

Martinez, who has has sought to raise awareness of breast cancer since she was diagnosed in 2009, has begun radioembolization treatments for her disease. She shared her story with KABB’s Yami Virgin in a report that aired Thursday.

“To be a part of this is amazing because it is so new to San Antonio. I feel lucky that I have the opportunity to do this story and to let people know that this is an option,” Martinez said.

Miriam Zamorano

The move for Zamorano, who was a reporter, anchor and traffic reporter at Fort Myer’s WINK before heading to KABB in San Antonio, coincides with the birth of her first child.

“I am so excited to join the Fox 4 Rising team and look forward to bringing Southwest Florida viewers what they need to get their day started right,” Zamorano said in a statement posted to the station’s website. “I want to tell about what is going on in the world, but more importantly, I want our viewers to know about the news that is relevant to them. We’re going to be informational, but we’re also going to have fun.”

The station also announced Amy Wegmann, who left the station to support her husbands run for Congress, will fill-in for Carley Wegner on “Fox 4 Morning Blend” while Wegner is on medical leave.

Former NBA star and current NBA commentator Charles Barkley has made a habit of dissing San Antonio as he covers the Spurs for TNT, going so far as to regularly call the city’s women fat.

Barkley was in the Alamo City this week as the Spurs competed in the Western Conference Finals, and he was confronted by an excited group of local reporters when he made a public appearance with the city’s mayor.

Among the collected journalists, was KABB reporter Christina Coleman, who Barkley put his arm around and declared, “I like the women” (video above–around 0:54 mark).

Lee spent seven years anchoring the evening newscasts for the San Antonio Fox-affiliate. She left in 2009 and has spent the past three years producing segments on Fox Sports Southwest.

“KABB was very good to me the first time around,” Lee said. “I believe in the people and the product. It was a no brainer to go back and I can’t believe I even get my old desk.”

Lee will anchor the weekend evening newscasts with Ted Garcia when she rejoins the station on April 9. She replaces Mileka Lincoln, who joined Austin’s KEYE this week.

Lincoln was hired from KABB in San Antonio to be the morning anchor. She is paired with Hunter Ellis, who was promoted to the anchor desk from his previous job as a reporter for the KEYE 4 p.m. newscast.

Popular Austin anchor Fred Cantu, who has been filling in as the morning anchor since last year, will become a feature reporter for KEYE, according to the Austin American-Statesman. He will revive his weekly “Gadget Guy” reports that focus on technology trends. continued…

Mileka Lincoln

“It’s my dream job — so I can’t wait!” Lincoln told TVSpy via email. “KEYE’s re-launching a new morning show (set to hopefully debut at the beginning of April) so this is a very exciting transition.”

Lincoln is currently a weekend anchor and reporter at KABB, the Fox-affiliate in San Antonio. Her last day at the station is Friday.

KEYE’s morning newscast has been anchored by Fred Cantu since October. The San Antonio Express-News reports Lincoln will “c0-anchor” the morning newscast, although it is not immediately clear who her co-anchor will be. KEYE did not return TVSpy’s request for comment.

James Keith

Keith regularly co-anchored KABB’s 9 p.m. newscast but decided to leave for a job with more conventional hours, accepting a PR position with a local school district. After the sudden death of KABB news director Greg Koelfgen earlier this year, though, Keith began to reassess his career path, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

“Being able to go back as a news manager is a dream come true,” Keith told the Express-News‘ Jeanne Jakle. “I’m excited about being back in a newsroom and being in a position where I can help guide reporters.”

Keith is assuming the post vacated by Keith McMahan, who succeeded Koelfgen as news director.

Although he may be asked to fill in at the anchor desk on occasion, Keith said that he’s looking forward to life behind the camera. “Honestly,” he said, “it’s been nice being able to grow facial hair when I want!”

Keith McMahan

McMahan has spent his entire broadcast career in San Antonio, starting out as a sports producer for ABC-affiliate KSAT before moving on to KMOL (now WOAI, an NBC-affiliate) where he worked as executive sports producer. After a brief time working in PR, McMahan joined KABB as assistant news director, working under the late Greg Koelfgen.

Koelfgen passed away in January at the age of 53.

“Greg was the consummate pro, and his untimely death was a personal blow to all of us.  I look back [and] I still don’t know how we as a newsroom made it through this time,”  McMahan told TVSpy via email. “I feel blessed to have the opportunity to build on Greg’s legacy here.”

San Antonio’s KABB remembered news director Greg Koelfgen with a special segment during its 10 p.m. newscast on Tuesday.  Koelfgen, 53, died unexpectedly on Monday night.

Sports director Chuck Miketinac said the following at the end of the newscast:

Our news director Greg Koelfgen died unexpectedly last night.  Again, our condolences to his wife Donna, and his two daughters, Quinn and Haley.

We lost a boss but more importantly, we lost our buddy, too. Many of you didn’t know Greg, but maybe you know somebody like him.
