KATC Moves Jim Hummel to Weeknights

Jim Hummel, weekend anchor for the Lafayette, LA ABC affiliate, KATC, will be joining the 10 pm. weeknight newscast, according to The Independent Weekly.

Hummel will replace Hoyt Harris, who will still anchor the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscast.  Harris will continue to produce his 10 p.m. segment, “The Rant”.

KATC president and general manager, Andrew Shenkan told the Independent Weekly in a statement, “With Hoyt’s experience in tackling the controversial issues of the day, Marcy’s knowledge of this community and its needs, and Jim’s fearless, relentless approach to getting the story first — and getting it right — you won’t find a better local news anchor team anywhere in the country.”

Hummel was named weekend anchor for KATC two years ago, joining the station as a general assignment reporter in 2009.  He previously worked for NECN in Newton, MA.

Longtime KATC Morning Anchor Tom Voinche Retires

Longtime KATC morning anchor Tom Voinche is retiring after two decades with the Lafayette, LA station.

“What a wonderful 20 years it has been,” Voinche said. “I appreciate the opportunity to have been a part of the KATC family, learning much, and working with very talented people. I would especially like to thank our viewers and advertisers. Without their support, my TV3 career would have been very brief.”

Voinche, who grew up just outside Lafayette, plans to travel with his wife and “explore some of our great country.”

KATC Transitions to HD With New Set, Graphics

KATC, the ABC-affiliate in Layfayette, LA, began broadcasting in high definition this week from a brand-new set.

The concept for the set design was a collaboration between KATC and AR&D, according to the station. The 5 p.m. newscast on Monday, which included the debut of a new graphics package, was the first from the redesigned space.

“Our goal was to provide the people of Acadiana with a newscast that can stack up against those seen in markets  10 times our size — one the entire community can be proud of,” news director Letitia Walker said in a statement.
