Legendary Chicago Anchor Team to Step Down Thursday

Anchor legends Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson will sign off from the Chicago CBS owned station WBBM for the final time Thursday.

“I think we’ve benefited more than CBS,” Kurtis told Time Out Chicago‘s Robert Feder. “What fun to relive the best years of your life. Walter and I started co-anchoring in 1973. I was 33. He was 36 or 37, I think. Now we’re over 70.”

In their first run with WBBM, the two anchored the 10:00 pm. news from 1973 until 1982. They then returned to the Chicago station in 2010. They announced their most recent departure in August last year, handing the reins of their 6:00 p.m. newscast to Rob Johnson and Kate Sullivan. Read more

WBBM Anchor’s Manti Te’o Interview in the Spotlight After Girlfriend Hoax Revealed

After an extensively-reported Deadspin article revealed that Manti Te’o‘s dead girlfriend never existed, a November interview the Notre Dame football star did with WBBM anchor and Notre Dame alumnus Kate Sullivan has made its way into the national spotlight.

Te’o talked extensively about his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, in an interview that was conducted by Notre Dame and featured on the university’s website. Te’o recounted sleeping on the phone with her as she was in the hospital and told Sullivan that Kekua had written him a letter for every game before she died (video above, beginning at the 2:40 mark). Bill Kurtis, Walter Jacobson Stepping Down From WBBM Anchor Desk Next Year

WBBM evening anchor team Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson announced today that they will leave the 6 p.m. newscast in March of next year.

The pair, who gathered with colleagues to celebrate the second anniversary of their return to the Chicago CBS O&O, will hand the 6 p.m. newscast over to Rob Johnson and Kate Sullivan, who currently anchor the 5 and 10 p.m. newscast.

Kurtis and Jacobson anchored at 10 p.m. from 1973-82. It is not clear whether the pair will retire; Kurtis said he plans to focus on his other businesses.  Read more

Local Chicago Stations Cover Politics, Protests at NATO Summit

Chicago stations were in overdrive this weekend covering the ongoing NATO Summit, which continues today at McCormick Place.

WFLD‘s Bob Sirrot and Robin Robinson co-anchored an hour-long newscast at 5 p.m. Sunday on the Fox O&O. Political editor Mike Flannery‘s regular Sunday morning newscast was expanded to an hour this weekend.

On NBC O&O WMAQ, weekday anchors Stefan Holt and Daniella Guzman anchored a special 11 a.m. newscast on Sunday. WMAQ also expanded its 5 and 10 p.m. newscasts, anchored by Allison Rosati and Rob Stafford, to an hour. Read more
