WCPO Anchor Kathrine Nero: ‘I Have Breast Cancer’

WCPO morning anchor Kathrine Nero has been off the air for the past couple of weeks and on Wednesday she explained why.

“One month ago today…I found out that I have breast cancer,” Nero told viewers at the end of the Cincinnati ABC-affiliate’s morning newscast, as she fought back tears. “Now, I’m 38–young by breast cancer standards–and I have no family history, so this was the furthest thing from our minds. After the initial shock, it was time to fight it.”

During her time off, Nero underwent a lumpectomy and had some lymph nodes removed. Now she’s waiting on the next step, which will likely be radiation. Read more

Anchor Kathrine Nero Posts Tribute to Laid Off Camera Operators on WCPO’s Website

Anchor Kathrine Nero (right) posted a tribute on WCPO‘s website to the nine camera operators that the station is laying off this month.

In October, the Cincinnati ABC-affiliate announced that it would be laying off several camera operators as it switched to an automated system.

“One of the bigwigs in our company explained why we’re losing our co-workers and using robots instead,” writes Nero, who anchors WCPO’s morning newscast. “And admittedly it makes a lot of sense–a lot of business sense. But in my opinion, it doesn’t make people sense.” Read more
