Britt Moreno Joins KCNC as Morning Anchor

Britt Moreno is the new morning co-anchor at KCNC, the CBS O&O in Denver. Moreno will anchor the 5 a.m., 6 a.m. and noon newscasts alongside Alan Gionet beginning in early April.

“We are very pleased to have Britt join CBS4,” news director Tim Wieland said in announcing the hire. “She is a great journalist who connects with viewers and will be a strong addition to our talented team.”

Moreno comes to KCNC from KSAZ, the Fox O&O in Phoenix, where she has been the weekend morning anchor since 2010. Prior to that, she worked at KRGV in Welasco, Texas, as a general assignment reporter.

Moreno replaces Brooke Wagner, who left KCNC in January.

KCNC Unveils Rugged Mobile Weather Lab

KCNC, the CBS owned affiliate in Denver, has debuted its new Mobile Weather Lab, a souped up Chevy Suburban it calls “Colorado’s first and most technologically sophisticated moving weather station.”

“This is a really exciting new addition to our news team,” news director Tim Wieland said. “The mobile weather lab is the first vehicle in the state that can travel anywhere and broadcast live weather data instantly giving our reporters and photographers the ability to cover Colorado’s extreme weather conditions including tornadoes, fires, blizzards and hail storms from even very remote locations so that viewers can have the most up-to-date and accurate reports.”

The Suburban has been updated for off-road use and includes the ability to measure wind speed, wind chill, precipitation, barometric pressure and solar intensity. It can deliver instant weather updates three different ways: through microwave, satellite and bonded cellular technology. Brooke Wagner Out at KCNC

KCNC morning anchor Brooke Wagner has signed off from the Denver CBS owned station.

Wagner tweeted the news on her last day saying, “I am leaving CBS4, but thanks 4 your support! I’ll revise my Twitter handle soon&will keep you updated. Happy New Year!”

According to the Denver Post, Wagner’s contract was not renewed and news director Tim Wieland plans to,”‘inject the morning news with new energy,’ with plans on the production side along with staff changes, [none] of which is finalized yet.”

Wagner had been with KCNC for ten years. Before coming to KCNC she worked for KSWB in San Diego, CA, KTBC in Austin, TX, WTAJ in Altoona, PA and KXII in Sherman, TX.

Jennifer Zeppelin Named Chief Meteorologist at KTUL

KTUL has named a new chief meteorologist to replace Frank Mitchell, who retired earlier this week. Jennifer Zeppelin will step into the role at the Tulsa ABC affiliate, making her Tulsa’s first female chief meteorologist.

Zeppelin has been a freelance meteorologist at KTUL for the past nine months. She made the move to Tulsa earlier this year after her husband accepted a job at the Oklahoma State University Foundation. Prior to that, she worked at KCNC in Denver as the morning and noon meteorologist.

“In the last few months [Zeppelin] has shown all of us that she not only loves what she does, but also is serious about protecting our viewers from severe weather,” KTUL general manager Pat Baldwin said in a statement. “We believe Oklahomans will welcome her on board wholeheartedly.”

CBS and Cablevision Renew Carriage Agreement

CBS and Cablevision announced the renewal of their content carriage agreements for the CBS O&Os. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The agreement covers Cablevision subscribers in the New York tri-state area served by WCBS, Philadelphia’s KYW and Denver’s KCNC and also includes Cablevision’s continued carriage of Showtime, Smithsonian Channel and CBS Sports Network.

“This broad agreement will ensure that Cablevision customers will continue to have access to the CBS programming they already enjoy, across a range of networks, as well as new services Cablevision will launch in the coming months, including Showtime Anytime and CBS prime time shows on demand,” said Mac Budill, Cablevision’s executive vice president of programming.

Romney Campaign Restricts Questions on Abortion, Akin During KCNC Interview

KCNC reporter Shaun Boyd revealed she was told to stay away from certain topics during her interview with presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney this morning.

“There one stipulation to the interview was that I not ask him about abortion or Todd Akin,” Boyd, the political specialist at the Denver CBS O&O, said on the 12 p.m. newscast today (video above).

A Romney campaign spokesperson told Politico, “This is not how we operate. The matter is being addressed.” continued…

Veteran KCNC Reporter Suzanne McCarroll Reflects on Covering Columbine, Aurora Shootings

Suzanne McCarroll, a reporter at Denver CBS O&O KCNC for 30 years, reflects on her experience covering both the 1999 Columbine shooting and the recent Aurora movie theater shooting in an essay for Poynter. McCarroll points out that although her career in local news “might seem dull” to a foreign network correspondent, in reality it has been anything but:

But no one told me I’d be interviewing parents who lost their children because they went to school at one day. No one warned me that the deaths of young people would come, not in a war zone, but in a suburban movie theater.

I never envisioned that not once, but twice, in my career, I would have parents come up to me frantic and fearful, begging for news of their children, only to tell them I had no news to share. Their children, first at Columbine High School, and now at Theater Nine in Aurora, were dead. continued…

12 Dead, 50 Injured in Colorado Massacre

Local stations in Denver remain in breaking news coverage at this hour after a gunman opened fire at a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, CO left at least 12 dead and 50 injured.

NBC-affiliate KUSA was the first station to go into continuing coverage, around 2:25 a.m. local time. Reporter Brandon Rittiman anchored from the scene of the shooting. Rittiman was joined by morning anchor Kyle Dyer at 2:45 a.m.

KMGH, the ABC-affiliate, ran a breaking news ticker during “World News Now” starting shortly after 2:40 a.m. “World News” reported on the news at 2:50 a.m. KMGH broke in to that program with its own coverage at 3:08 a.m. Mitch Jelniker anchored coverage. continued…

Denver Stations and County Officials Clash Over Coverage of High Park Wildfire

Denver stations have been in overdrive this week covering an extensive wildfire that has burned more then 40,000 acres in Larimer County. On Monday, the county sheriff’s office requested that the media not show images of destroyed homes, out of respect to homeowners. News directors have noted the sensitivity of the issue, but have turned down the request, the Denver Post reports:

“While we have deep respect for what Larimer County is asking, at the same time we are hearing from the same community that they want to know,” said Jeff Harris, News Director at [KMGH]. The outpouring of response regarding the station’s extended coverage has been rewarding, he said.

“This is not the time for that kind of fight,” Harris said.

“We certainly understand the emotional nature of those images,” said [KCNC] News Director Tim Wieland. continued…

In an interview on Wednesday in Colorado, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney grew frustrated with KCNC reporter Shaun Boyd when she asked him a viewer’s question about medical marijuana (after she had pressed him on the issue of same-sex marriage).

Mitt Romney fielded questions with the poise of a seasoned presidential candidate during a series of one-on-one interviews with Denver reporters on Wednesday, but at one point he became frustrated with KCNC‘s Shaun Boyd when she asked him a question that a viewer had shared on the station’s Facebook page.

After pressing Romney on the issue same-sex marriage, Boyd asked him a viewer’s question about medical marijuana.

While President Obama was preparing to sit for an exclusive interview with ABC News, in which he would express his support for same-sex marriage, Mitt Romney was in Colorado, talking to local reporters.

Just hours before news broke of Obama’s gay marriage pronouncement, Romney affirmed his opposition to same-sex unions in interviews with reporters from a handful of Denver stations.

On Tuesday night, Republicans in the Colorado state house of representatives blocked a bill that would have allowed same-sex civil unions, so on Wednesday reporters from KDVR, KUSA, and KCNC asked Romney to discuss his stance on the issue. continued…

Obama Talks Energy in Latest Round of Local Press

President Obama did another round of local interviews yesterday, sitting down with eight stations from the Orlando, Cincinnati, Denver, Los Angeles, Austin, Des Moines, Las Vegas and Pittsburgh markets.

The interviews lasted about five minutes each and focused mostly on gas prices and energy policy. “As long as gas prices are going up, people are going to feel like I’m not doing enough and I understand that,” Obama told WFTV’s Greg Warmoth. “Ultimately, though, there’s no silver bullet here.”

Mike Hooker Leaving Denver’s KCNC After 17 Years

Mike Hooker, a reporter for Denver CBS O&O KCNC, is leaving the station for a job at Colorado State University.

Hooker is a 22-year veteran of television, including 17 years at KCNC, according to a statement from Colorado State. He will begin in his new role, as executive director of public affairs and communications, on February 20.

Hooker is the station’s Northern newsroom reporter. He announced the news of his departure on Twitter earlier today.

After 27 Years At KCNC, Paul Day Will Retire in 2012

After 40 years in the news business, KCNC reporter Paul Day will retire early next year.

Day, who focuses mostly on environmental reporting, joined the Denver CBS O&O in 1984. According to the Denver Post, news director Tim Wieland hopes that Day will continue to contribute to part-time special projects for the station.

Day, who got his start in television in the 1970s, told the Post that the industry has changed profoundly in his four decades as a reporter, saying his biggest fear used to be “that a splice would break.”

“Now I can Skype with my granddaughter,” he said. “I’ve had a blast.”
