KMBC-KCWE Names Sarah Smith President and General Manager

Sarah Smith will take over as president and general manager of Hearst-owned duopoly KMBC-KCWE — the Kansas City ABC and CW affiliates, respectively — on September 6. She replaces Wayne Godsey, who announced his retirement in June after more than 40 years in the business.

Smith stays within Hearst even as she changes jobs — she has been president and general manager of Hearst-owned KETV, the ABC affiliate in Omaha, since 2007. Under Smith’s leadership, KETV has excelled, leading its competitors across every newscast.

“The station is Omaha’s local news leader, with an outstanding reputation for journalism excellence and service to the community,” Hearst president and CEO David Barrett said in a statement. “And KETV’s consistently strong revenue and profit performance attests to her impressive business credentials.”

Smith has worked at eight stations nationwide, including as the VP-GM of both KRCR in Chico, CA and KAEF in Eureka, CA. Hearst has not yet announced a replacement for her at KETV.

Wayne Godsey Will Retire From KMBC-KCWE

After more than 40 years in the local news business, KMBC-KCWE president and general manager Wayne Godsey will retire later this year.

Godsey has been at the helm of the Hearst-owned Kansas City duopoly since 1999. Under his watch, KMBC has been recognized for news excellence several times, including two Edward R. Murrow Awards this year.

“KMBC’s longstanding tradition of strong news leadership and dedicated community service remain a model for television stations throughout the Midwest,” said Hearst Television President and CEO David Barrett, in announcing the move. Read more

George Matz Leaving News Director Post in Portland to Become Assistant ND in Kansas City

George Matz, who has led the newsroom of WMTW in Portland, ME for the past six years, is set to join Kansas City duopoly KMBC-KCWE as assistant news director.

“I’ve worked with George over the years and I’m very excited to have someone with his experience be part of this management team,” said Sherrie Brown, KMBC’s news director, in making the announcement.

The move represents another shift within the Hearst organization for Matz, who has been a part of the broadcasting group for over twelve years. Before joining WMTW, Matz served as assistant news director and operations manager for Milwaukee’s WISN.

“KMBC is one of the most well respected stations in the country,” Matz said. “I’m looking forward to working with such a talented news team.”

Matz’s first day with KMBC-KCWE is scheduled for May 2nd.
