Ken White Replaced as WCCB News Director

WCCB news director Ken White has left the Charlotte FOX affiliate. According to the Charlotte Observer, he has been replaced by assistant news director Angela Robbins.

“This was a bit of a punch,” White told the Observer. “But they’ve been good to me over the years and it’s been a fun place to work.”

White, who launched the news department at the Bahakel owned station, had been news director at WCCB for thirteen years.

According to the Observer, White is on temporary assignment at WBBJ in Jackson, TN. WBBJ, which is also owned by Bahakel Communications, is looking for a news director.

Last week, WCCB learned it will be losing its affiliation after FOX Television Stations purchased two Charlotte stations, WJZY and WMYT.

Newsroom Brawl Lands WCCB Anchor Brien Blakely in Hospital

Anchor Brien Blakely spent Tuesday evening at a Charlotte emergency room instead of the WCCB anchor desk after getting into a violent altercation with a news producer.

Moments before WCCB’s 10 p.m. newscast, Blakely got into an argument with a producer that escalated into a physical brawl.  During the fight, Blakely, who joined the Charlotte Fox-affiliate in 2005, was sent flying over a desk.  His nose was badly cut during the fall and he was rushed to an area hospital for treatment.

Police were called to the scene but no charges were filed.

“I was protecting the honor and integrity of our station,” Blakely told the Charlotte Observer about the fight.

The news producer walked out of the station after the altercation as Blakely went to the hospital.  Both men were not at work on Wednesday.

WCCB has had its fair share of turmoil recently.  Read more

WCCB News Director Ken White Arrested for Stealing Groceries

WCCB news director Ken White has been charged with larceny for allegedly stealing groceries from a Charlotte supermarket. According to police reports, White was arrested on Sunday and charged with a misdemeanor for walking away with $79.24 worth of groceries.

White has been with Fox-affiliate WCCB since 1999.  According to the Charlotte Observer, White stole a bag of snacks for the station’s remote crew stationed at the Carolina Panthers game.  The bag of potato chips, apples, soda, and bottled water is something that would have usually been charged to a company credit card.

White was back at work on Monday following the incident and WCCB has refused to comment on his arrest.  “We wouldn’t comment on a personnel matter,” John Hutchinson, WCCB’s vice president, told the Observer. “If there’s anything to it, we’d certainly look into it.”

WCCB’s website regularly compiles a gallery of recent mugshots taken by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. White’s mugshot (left) is not included in WCCB’s collection from the day of his arrest.

>Update, 12/18/13: White tells us the charges have been dropped and the arrest has been expunged.
