This time we look into what the stations in Bakersfield, CA, are covering.

Murder Suspect Surrenders to Bakersfield TV Station

A murder suspect showed up at Bakersfield NBC affiliate KGET Sunday night to proclaim his innocence before surrendering to police.

KGET said Brendan Sanders showed up at the station around 9:00 p.m. Sunday night with some friends. Police said they think Sanders murdered one man and wounded a teenager last month.

“I’m innocent and I don’t want to get accused of something that I didn’t do,” Sanders told KGET in an interview before he was taken into custody.

KGET news director Mike Trihey called police who arrested Sanders at the station.

According to KGET, Sanders and his friends said another reason they showed up was to retrieve the reward from the secret witness program for Sander’s arrest.

KGET News Director John Pilios Retires

John Pilios has retired after more than a decade as news director at Bakersfield NBC affiliate KGET.

Pilios got his start in TV news in 1987 after working in radio. He was hired as news director of KCOY in Santa Maria in 1990 and came to KGET in 1999 as assistant news director.

The station said goodbye to Pilios with a feature about his life, his career and his reputation of being a fair manager who always pushed his staff to do better. “I tried to treat everyone fairly,” Pilios told KGET. “I don’t think as a good manager you treat everybody the same because that’s not what being a manager is about. You treat everyone fairly. Everyone has a different ‘go’ button. Some need some yelling, others a softer touch.” You can watch the station’s story about Pilios after the jump. Read more

Part of KGET Building Collapses Before Saturday Night’s Newscast

Bakersfield NBC affiliate KGET made the top of its own newscast Saturday night when the facade of the station’s building fell to the ground just before 10:00 p.m.

Calling it a “Boom in The Night,” anchor Kelsey Thomas told viewers she was putting a story together for the 11:00 p.m. news when she heard a loud boom. Thomas said the lights went out. Meteorologist Rob Martin told viewers he, the show’s director and the master control operator went outside to check things out. “I just looked,” said Martin. “And I was like, Whoa!”

“The building sustained a lot of broken glass and damage to the entry area of the building,” said Bakersfield Fire Department Battalion Chief Gary Turner in KGET’s report. “Fortunately no one was on the sidewalk.”

“Damage to the structure (is) probably set at around $20,000 and the building department is looking into the incident,”  Turner told The Bakersfield Californian. There’s no word what caused the collapse.

Nexstar Broadcasting has completed its acquisition of three California stations from Newport Television: NBC affiliate KGET and Telemundo affiliate KKEY in Bakersfield and CBS affiliate KGPE in Fresno.

The $34.5 million transaction will create duopolies for Nexstar in both Fresno and Bakersfield, Calif. Nexstar announced plans to acquire NBC affiliate KSEE in Fresno last month.

“This transaction is consistent with our acquisition criteria as it further diversifies our operations, creates new duopoly markets and is financially accretive,” Nexstar president and CEO Perry A. Sook said in a statement.
