Solano comes to Detroit from KIAH, the CW-affiliate in Houston.  Before KIAH, Solano spent three years working as the weekend sports anchor at WZZM in Grand Rapids.

Mia Gradney

Until June, Gradney was the weekday evening anchor at crosstown rival KIAH, the CW-affiliate. She spent 12 years at the station. Gradney began her television career at another Houston station, ABC O&O KTRK.

KHOU news director Philip Bruce told the Chronicle that Gradney will work as a general assignment reporter beginning July 2.

Cummins resigned from KARK after waking up in a bathtub next to the dead body of Dexter Williams. Williams was determined to have died of asphyxia and drug intoxication.

Monahan left KIAH in March after 11 years with the Houston CW-affiliate. “From all I’ve heard and seen, Little Rock’s a great city and the weather will be challenging — just like I like it,” Monahan told Houston media blogger Mike McGuff.

Monahan, a veteran meteorologist, has also worked at KDLT in Sioux Falls, WOOD in Grand Rapids and KGWN in Cheyenne. He starts at KARK on Monday.

“I will be leaving Houston and headed to the great city of San Antonio,” Moreno wrote on Facebook. “More details to come soon.”

Houston media blogger Mike McGuff reported Moreno is headed to KENS, the CBS-affiliate in San Antonio, as a reporter and fill-in anchor. Her last day at KIAH will be October 7.

Moreno, a Houston native, has worked at KIAH since 2009. Prior to that, she was a reporter and associate producer at KRGV, the ABC-affiliate serving the Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Houston’s KIAH, which recently launched the unconventional, anchor-less newscast “NewsFix,” is debuting a new, two-hour morning show that it describes as “irreverent, provocative, endearing and always unpredictable.”

“The Houston television market is crowded with traditional network morning shows and doesn’t have anything like Eye-Opener,” said Roger Bare, KIAH’s vice president and general manager, in a post on mikemcguff.com. “We want viewers tuning in to get a quick dose of the news they need, and to come back because they saw something new that they didn’t expect.”

“EyeOpener” will be anchored by Kirby O’Connell, Sean Dowling, and Adam Lee Campbell (or ALC, for short), with Mia Gradney providing local news updates from KIAH.

While “EyeOpener” is being positioned as KIAH’s morning show, it appears that (as McGuff points out) the program will eventually be syndicated in a handful of markets with local stations plugging in news updates. The show will debut on KIAH May 9th.

KIAH‘s long-awaited, anchor-less newscast debuted this weekend, promising a fresh, new approach to the local newscast (15-minute introduction above).

“NewsFix,” the brainchild of former Tribune executive Lee Abrams, replaces the organizational presence of anchors in a studio with a newsreel-style narrator and a large map of the world studded with icons reminiscent of iPhone apps that correspond to the day’s top stories.

Many in the TV news community feared that the stripped-down “NewsFix” signaled a shift in the business away from the conventional newscast format. The first broadcasts of “NewsFix,” though, don’t represent a threat to the conventional format as much as a reminder of how much the media landscape has shifted in the past few years. “NewsFix” is less a rejoinder to the staid traditions of the local newscast and more a symbol that viewers are consuming more, and more varied, forms of content throughout their day. continued…

Trevino, who is a Harris County constable, will deliver a regular crime report for the station’s 5 and 9 p.m. “NewsFix” newscasts. As the Houston Chronicle points out:

The use of an elected official in an on-camera role for the 5 and 9 p.m. shows is perhaps the most jarring of the nontraditional elements of “NewsFix,” designed by former Tribune Co. executive Lee Abrams as an effort to blow up traditional newscast forms by eliminating anchors and most on-camera reporters.

“I respect the role of the media, even when it isn’t good news for those of us in law enforcement,” Trevino told the Chronicle.  “I understand there are certain things you can’t talk about during an investigation. But when you’re looking for criminals, you have to pursue them rather than keeping things low key. You have to ask for help.”

“This is not a show that’s stacked like a traditional newscast where, OK, 15 minutes in I know I’m going to get a weather tease and then the full weather 10 minutes later with sports is at the end,”  Bare told Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Tribune recently. “Each individual program segment will start with local news and move into national and international news with some kind of feature or commentary. … So people that come in and watch pieces of the news are going to get a flavor of what the entire newscast is.”

KIAH will offer 15-minute previews of “NewsFix” this Friday with the official debut coming on Saturday at 5 p.m.

As Rosenthal points out, the newscast sounds less like a revolution than a revival.
