The big winners were Boston ABC affiliate WCVB with 7 awards, Denver NBC affiliate KUSA with nine awards, Seattle NBC affiliate KING with eight awards and Minneapolis NBC affiliate KARE with ten awards in the large market category for their regions.

The most dominant small market stations in their respective regions were Tulsa, OK, ABC affiliate KTUL with six awards and New Orleans FOX affiliate WVUE with nine awards.

The broadcasters have said disclosure of the terms would undermine their negotiating positions with the cable company and would eventually result in consumers paying more to watch their stations.

The Bellingham Herald reported the issue over whether the records are public or private came up after Click Cable and Fisher owned station KOMO settled a contentious dispute over retransmission fees.  After the agreement was reached, the News Tribune asked for details, including just how much the new fees were. continued…

A man protesting same-sex marriage was arrested in Seattle after threatening members of a KING news crew (video above).

The Seattle NBC affiliate was covering marriage licenses being issued in the city. The photojournalist on the scene captured footage of the man screaming profanities and threatening to kill people before he struck the camera. Seattle police later arrested him for assault and harassment, according to the station. [h/t the247Newsroom]

KING executive news director Mark Ginther said that a slowdown in advertising revenue has forced the station to make cuts throughout the newsroom. Seven newsroom positions were eliminated last month “through layoffs and the elimination of several already vacant positions,” the station says.

Mak (pictured) will continue to lead the station’s political coverage, and the show’s producer, Mike Cate, will continue to produce politics.

“We will continue the award-winning coverage we have given to political and public interest programming in our more than eight and a half hours of local news and, from time to time, we will run Up Front as specials when events demand,” KING general manager Ray Heacox said in a statement.

The long fight against the tumors that have ravaged her brain is over. She is at peace now, comfortable and surrounded by all that is good. Please know, as we do, that your love enveloped her. It strengthened and encouraged her.

She loved your compassion and concern more than you’ll ever know. You helped her fight a valiant fight. We want to thank each and every one of you for that.

Goertzen was hospitalized over the weekend after developing pneumonia while undergoing treatment for the tumors, which she has battled for more than 10 years.

Goertzen’s career, which spanned more than three decades at the Seattle ABC-affiliate, was significantly altered by non-cancerous brain tumors, which were discovered in 1998. She returned to the station after surgery later that year, but the tumors re-appeared in 2005, eventually compromising her facial features and ability to speak on air. continued…

Jordan comes from WFTV in Orlando, where he has been the news director for the last decade. It was Jordan’s second stint as WFTV news director. Both WFTV and KIRO are both owned by Cox Media Group. The move is a return to Seattle for Jordan, who is a former news director at NBC-affiliate KING.

Tuesday’s protests turned violent and resulted in widespread vandalism in downtown Seattle. Footage shot by television stations could be used to identify suspects, the Times reports:

The state’s “reporter shield law” limits law-enforcement access to unpublished material gathered by journalists, but three network-affiliated TV stations contacted Tuesday said that with a subpoena they would turn over footage that already had aired.

Holly Gauntt, KOMO-TV news director, said one clip the station aired shows a black-clad protester changing into street clothes. “There’s one shot we have where you can clearly see the guy,” she said.

A veteran photographer for KING was injured while covering the protests for the NBC-affiliate.

Richard Departee, who has worked at the Seattle NBC-affiliate for more than 30 years, was shooting video of the May Day protests when he found himself in the middle of a group wearing “face masks and dark glasses.”

“I think as soon as they saw me it was like ‘Hey get out of here, you know, scum,’ and started pushing me,” Departee said. The camera was still rolling as the group surrounded him and one of the protestors “popped me in the face,” he said.

KLRU, a PBS station, won an Institutional Peabody Award for “Austin City Limits.” The show is in its 37th season, making it the world’s longest running live music television program. KLAS won for “Desert Underwater,” a series of reports on the housing crisis in Las Vegas. Covering the fun being had at Queen Anne Hill in Seattle following a recent snow storm, KING reporter Meg Coyle warned viewers about the dangers of sledding down the icy slope. One sledder wasn’t happy about Coyle’s disclaimer so she walked into the live shot and accused Coyle of “ruining the fun” (video above).

As KING cut back to the studio, anchor Dennis Bounds responded to the interruption with a “Waa, waa, waaaa.”

For the past decade, Goertzen has publicly struggled with a benign brain tumor that has left her unable to anchor daily newscasts. Instead, she continues to work at KOMO in a variety of other roles, from special interviews to production work.

Although Goertzen’s facial nerves were recently compromised, her sense of humor remains intact. When “Evening Magazine” host Meeghan Black presented Goertzen with the award, the longtime KOMO anchor said she would display it next to another one of her prized awards.

WTHR staffers at the 2011 Murrow Awards

Twenty local television stations were presented with Edward R. Murrow Awards at an RTDNA dinner honoring the winners in New York City last night. TVSpy was there as WTHR in Indianapolis was presented the award for Overall Excellence in a large market. WGRZ in Buffalo was honored for Overall Excellence in a small market.

Although the winners represented every platform of the news industry — national news, radio, online — enthusiasm for the local stations was palpable, with staffers from winning stations cheering on their colleagues audibly as they took the stage to accept their awards.

In his opening speech, RTDNA chairman Kevin Benz implored the 95 Murrow award winners — more than the RTDNA has ever presented before — to “celebrate truth through journalism.”

“The practice of producing great journalism is as important today as it has ever been,” he told the packed ballroom at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. continued…
