Jorge Torres Joining Albuquerque’s KOB

Jorge Torres will be joining Albuquerque NBC affiliate KOB as weekend meteorologist.

Torres is coming to KOB from El Paso ABC affiliate KVIA which announced the news its facebook page, “In case you missed it this morning Meteorologist Jorge Torres made the announcement that his last day on Good Morning El Paso will be Friday May 31st. Jorge will be taking over the as Weekend Meteorologist at KOB in Albuquerque. Lets all wish Jorge good luck as he continues his career.”

Torres has worked at KVIA since May 2009. KOB news director John Mason told TVSpy Torres starts at the station in mid-June.

John Mason Returns To KOB As News Director

John Mason has been named news director at Hubbard Broadcasting owned station, KOB, according to Rick Gevers’ blog.

Mason, who comes from Hubbard’s Minneapolis affiliate, KSTP, was an anchor and managing editor at the Albuquerque NBC affiliate between 1997 and 2004.

Gevers reports Mason will replace Laurie Passman who is returning to her previous position as assistant news director for KTVK in Phoenix.

Marissa Torres Joins KOAA as Morning Anchor

Marissa Torres is joining Colorado Springs NBC-affiliate KOAA, where she will co-anchor the morning newscast.

She replaces Jennifer Horbelt, who is moving into the evening anchor role at KOAA. Torres’ first day on the air alongside Adam Atchison and meteorologist Craig Eliot will be July 30.

Torres joins the station from KOB in Albuquerque, where she was a reporter and fill-in anchor. “I am honored to be coming to KOAA and to Southern Colorado,” she said in a statement. “And yes, I really am a morning person!”

KOB’s Steve Stucker Announces ‘Semi-Retirement’

Steve Stucker, the morning and noon meteorologist at KOB, has announced his “semi-retirement.”

Stucker has reduced his on-air duties, signing off from the noon newscast last Thursday. He plans to continue as the morning meteorologist. According to KOB, Stucker recently signed a five-year contract with the Albuquerque NBC-affiliate.

“Thanks to ALL of you who have been so kind to me here at the noon show the past 15 years,” Stucker said. “But it’s time to ‘semi-retire.’” continued…

Reporter Crystal Kobza Joins KTRK in Houston

Crystal Kobza has joined KTRK, the ABC O&O in Houston, media blogger Mike McGuff reports.

Kobza joins KTRK from KOB, the NBC-affiliate in Albuquerque, where she co-anchored the morning newscast. She has also worked at KETK in Tyler, TX and KMSS in Shreveport, according to McGuff.

Kobza’s will be a general assignment reporter for the station. Her first day on the air was last week.

KOB Reporter Gadi Schwartz Subpoenaed

Gadi Schwartz, a reporter at KOB in Albuquerque, has been issued a subpoena to reveal how he obtained dash-camera video that led to the firing of two police officers last year.

The video Schwartz obtained while reporting shows the takedown and subsequent arrest of Michael Schaefer in a Walmart parking lot. The video was the subject of an internal investigation within the Albuquerque Police Department, and as a result of the investigation, two police officers were fired and two more were disciplined.

An attorney for KOB told the Albuquerque Journal that Schwartz obtained the video “in the course of performing his duties as a reporter from a confidential source.”

Funeral services will be held today for Sharon Erickson, the 30-year-old KOB reporter who died over the weekend from complications following surgery.

KOB recently aired a segment remembering Erickson (video above).

“We want to take some time to remember Sharon for the smiling, fun, and hardworking woman that she was,” morning anchor Antoinette Antonio told viewers, fighting back tears.

KOB Reporter Dies Following Surgery

KOB reporter Sharon Erickson died on Saturday following complications from surgery she had earlier in the week. She was 30.

“You know her as Sharon Erickson, we know her as Sharon Fullilove, and she was exactly that, full of love,” KOB news director Laurie Passman said in a statement. “We were privileged to have her in our newsroom. She lit up any room she entered. She was a good person, a dedicated reporter and a rising star who loved covering news in this community. She will be greatly missed.” continued…

Reporter Jeremy Jojola Leaving KOB to Join KUSA

Jeremy Jojola is leaving Albuquerque’s KOB, where he has been an anchor and investigative reporter since 2002, to join Denver’s KUSA.

Jojola announced the move in a blog post this week, writing, “Over the last year, there has been a voice in me silently demanding change.”

Jojola first set foot in the KOB newsroom when he was 19, while on a field trip for a college journalism conference. After graduating from New Mexico State, Jojola joined KTSM in El Paso before eventually returning to New Mexico and KOB.

“Walking into the KUSA newsroom a couple of weeks ago was just as thrilling for me as it was when I was that 19 year old boy,” Jojola writes. “I’m excited. I’m thrilled. I’m delighted. I’m grateful.” continued…

Laurie Passman Returns to Albuquerque’s KOB as News Director

Albuquerque’s KOB has hired Laurie Passman, an assistant ND with Phoenix’s KTVK, as news director.

“She brings a lot of passion, skill and leadership to our news operation,” said Mike Burgess, KOB’s vice president and general manager, in announcing the hiring. “Laurie is from Albuquerque. Her knowledge of the city and the news business will insure we continue to produce the best news in town.”

Passman grew up in the Albuquerque area and attended the University of New Mexico. She began her TV news career as an intern with KOB in 1996.

“I was a weekend assignment editor, then weekend morning show producer. I drove live trucks, answered phones and organized files. I would have swept the floor if they asked,” Passman said, recalling her previous experience with KOB. “I credit my experience there with giving me a solid foundation in the news business.” continued…

Julie Szulczewski Returns to WSOC as News Director

Julie Szulczewski is returning to Charlotte as news director of WSOC-WAXN.

WSOC, an ABC-affiliate, announced today that Szulczewski, who served as a managing editor for the station before leaving a year ago, had been tapped to lead its newsroom.

“Julie brings a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective to WSOC-TV/WAXN-TV,” said Joe Pomilla, vice president and general manager of the Cox-owned duopoly, in announcing the move.

Szulczewski’s “fresh perspective” comes from her time with Albuquerque’s KOB, where she served as news director after leaving WSOC in early 2010.

“I’m excited and honored to have this opportunity in such a terrific newsroom,” Szulczewski said about her return to WSOC.

KCBS-KCAL Reporter Greg Mills Offers Advice for Daughter Heather, Now with KOB

In accepting a job with Albuquerque’s KOB, reporter-anchor Heather Mills was essentially following in her father’s footsteps. Mills’s father is veteran KCBS-KCAL reporter Greg Mills and he got his start at Roswell’s KBIM.

Mills comes to KOB from KAUZ in Wichita Falls, TX and her father couldn’t be happier. As she climbs the TV ranks in the southwest, the elder Mills offered her a bit of advice.

“I gave Heather two main pieces of advice,” he told TVSpy sister site FishbowlLA. “Be yourself; keep in mind that they’re hiring you, not someone else. Heather Mills Joins Albuquerque’s KOB

Albuquerque’s KOB has signed Heather Mills as a reporter and weekend co-anchor.

Mills is making a triple digit market jump with the move, coming to KOB from KAUZ in Wichita Falls, TX, where she was the CBS-affiliate’s main anchor.

“My dad’s first TV job was actually for KBIM-TV in Roswell,” Mills said in announcing her move to Albuquerque. “My parents loved New Mexico. Living and working in Albuquerque is going to be a dream come true for me.”

Mills will be joining Joe Vigil at the anchor desk on weekends beginning March 26th. Her first day with the station is March 14th.
