KOLN Anchor Vanessa Flowers Out at 6 and 10 P.M.

Vanessa Flowers is being moved off the anchor desk for the 6 and 11 pm. news at KOLN, The Lincoln Journal Star is reporting.

One year after replacing departing Serese Cole, Flowers has been moved to the Noon newscast.  She will continue to anchor the 5 p.m.

Her move prompts other line up changes which are, as general manager Jason Effinger told the Journal Star, all part of the Lincoln market’s increasing appetite for news:

“As the demand grows (for news), we are trying to grow with it,” said Effinger, who noted KOLN’s staff has grown 35 percent since 2009.

KOLN Anchor John Fortney Returning to WTAP

John Fortney, the evening anchor at KOLN-KGIN in Lincoln, is returning to Parkersburg, WV to be the anchor and news director at WTAP.

Fortney began his television career at WTAP as the weeknight weatherman in 1998. He was named primary anchor at the NBC-affiliate in 1994, a post he held for two years before leaving in 1996 to join Ohio News Network.

“We are very pleased that John is coming back to WTAP,” Roger Sheppard, station vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “He worked very hard when he was here and did some great reporting. In the past 15 years, he has gained a breadth of experience which he brings back to help make our station even better.” Read more

KOLN-KGIN Promotes Flowers to Main Anchor

In Lincoln, KOLN-KGIN has tapped Vanessa Flowers to co-anchor its 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts.

Flowers, who has been with the joint CBS-affiliate since November 2010, will work alongside current anchor John Fortney, effectively replacing Serese Cole, who left the station earlier this summer to join WOWT in Omaha.

Flowers has anchored KOLN-KGIN’s “Nebraska Central News“–a 9 p.m. newscast that airs on the stations’ MyTV digital subchannel–since its debut last December.

“This is a great opportunity to continue to serve Nebraska viewers,” she said of her move to 5, 6, and 10, which will bring her from Grand Island to Lincoln. “I get to work with the same great team of people, but in a different city.”

Sara Geake, who has worked as a reporter for KGIN since 2006, replaces Flowers as “NCN” anchor.

Anchor Serese Cole Moving From Lincoln to Omaha

Anchor Serese Cole said goodbye to KOLN-KGIN last week after 10 years with the Lincoln CBS-affiliate and word is that she’s moving to WOWT in Omaha. Both KOLN-KGIN and WOWT are owned by Gray Television.

Cole had anchored the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts for KOLN-KGIN and she told viewers last week that she was leaving to take a morning anchor job, a move that would allow her to spend more time with her two sons.

“While I love what I do, and I love the people I work with, I love my family, too,” Cole told viewers. “So, I’m taking a job as a morning anchor with one of our sister stations–which will allow me to spend my evenings and my weekends with my family.”

WOWT, which has been in need of a morning anchor since moving Malorie Maddox to evenings last month, has yet to confirm that Cole is joining the station but there is every indication that she is. Video of Cole’s farewell inside… Read more

Susan Ramsett Named KOLN-KGIN News Director

Susan Ramsett has been named news director of Gray Television’s KOLN-KGIN in Lincoln.

Since 2007, Ramsett has served as news director and anchor for Gray’s WSAW in Wausau, WI. She joined the CBS-affiliate ten years ago as an anchor and producer.

Ramsett replaces Jerry Howard, who served as KOLN-KGIN’s news director for three years before departing earlier this year.

KOLN-KGIN is a joint CBS-affiliate, with KGIN operating as a satellite station for areas west of Lincoln-based KOLN.

“Being offered a promotion within Gray Television is an exciting professional challenge!” Ramsett said in a recent blog post on WSAW’s website. “But leaving this station and a community I love is bittersweet.” Read more
