WPIX Remakes AM Show in Effort to Expand News Coverage Elsewhere

wpixlogo_304Tribune’s WPIX has revamped its morning show lineup. The station said the move was meant to help it invest more resources elsewhere.

A station spokesperson told TVSpy the 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. hour has been dropped.

And despite reports of Marysol Castro and Dan Mannarino leaving the New York CW affiliate, the station said it has moved the two former anchors to reporting in the mornings with Sukanya Krishnan and Kori Chambers anchoring the entire 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. show instead of just the 6:00 to 9:00 a.m.

In addition to the main anchor changes and new traffic reporter Kaitlin Monte, meteorologist Rachel Frank joins from 5:00 to 6:00 a.m. while Linda Church remains on the 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. show

A Tribune spokesperson told TVSpy, “Moving PIX11 Morning News’ start time from 4:00 am to 5:00 am allows the station the flexibility to invest more resources into the key morning hours and positions PIX11 to expand news coverage in other dayparts later this year.”

Media blogs were speculating that Castro was out at the station and Mannarino was not far behind after Castro shook Mannarino’s hand at the end of Thursday’s show and said, “Hey, dude. It was nice knowing you.”

NYC Stations Cover 9/11 Museum Dedication

President Barack Obama, survivors and victims’ families gathered this morning at the site of the 9/11 attacks for the dedication of the National September 11 Museum. With the exception of Fox-owned WNYW, stations in New York City provided special coverage of the dedication ceremony, which began shortly after 10 a.m.

Bill Ritter and Lori Stokes anchored on WABC, with Lisa Colagrossi reporting from Lower Manhattan for the ABC-owned station. On CBS-owned WCBS, Mary Calvi and Chris Wragge anchored with Lou Young reporting from the museum. Michael Gargiulo and Darlene Rodriguez anchored on NBC-owned WNBC, with David Ushery reporting from the World Trade Center. On CW affiliate WPIX, Kori Chambers anchored from the studio with Sukanya Krishnan and James Ford live from Lower Manhattan.

Obama, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and former New York Mayors Michael Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani all spoke at the ceremony, which lasted about an hour. “It is an honor for us to join in your memories, to recall and reflect but above all to reaffirm the true spirit of 9/11 — love, compassion, sacrifice — and to enshrine it in the heart of our nation forever,” Obama said.

NYC Stations Cover East Harlem Explosion

Stations in New York City spent several hours this morning covering a building explosion in East Harlem that caused the death of at least two people.

ABC-owned WABC was the first to report the news, breaking in to “Live! With Kelly and Michael” at 9:43 a.m. Ken Rosato and Michelle Charlesworth anchored. WABC had Kimberly Richardson, Rob Nelson and Sarah Wallace on the scene and Marcus Solis live from Harlem Hospital.

CBS-owned WCBS reported the explosion at 9:45 a.m., breaking into “The Queen Latifah Show” for a report anchored by Chris Wragge and Mary Calvi. Don Champion, Hazel Sanchez and John Slattery reported from East Harlem.

NBC-owned WNBC broke in to the fourth hour of “Today” with the news at 9:48 a.m. Michael Gargiulo anchored, with Jonathan Vigliotti, Michael George, Tracie Stahan and Telemundo’s Pablo Gutierrez reporting.

Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto reported the news at 9:49 on Fox-owned WNYW. Liz Dahlem and Ti-Hua Chang reported for the station from the scene.

CW affiliate WPIX reported the news at 9:53 a.m. with Kori Chambers, Dan Mannarino and Sukanya Krishnan anchoring. James Ford reported from East Harlem.

It is a move within Fox for Bomke, who has been the morning anchor at KRIV in Houston for the past three years. Prior to that, she worked at KTXL in Sacramento and WICD in Champaign, Ill. She began her career as a general assignment reporter at WICS in her hometown of Springfield, Ill.

News of Bomke’s hire was first reported by FTVLive.

A station spokesperson said Bomke’s first day will be September 30. She will anchor “Good Day Chicago” from 5 to 7 a.m. alongside Dawn Hasbrouck.

WFLD morning anchor Kori Chambers is leaving the Chicago Fox O&O, Chicago media reporter Robert Feder confirms. According to TunedIn’s Jerry Barmash, Chambers is expected to be named morning co-anchor at WPIX, Tribune Broadcasting’s CW affiliate in New York City.

Chambers is expected to co-anchor the WPIX morning newscast alongside Sukanya Krishnan after she returns from maternity leave next month, Barmash reports. A WFLD station source says Chambers wanted to return to his native New York.

A New Anchor Team on WFLD’s Noon Newscast?

Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder has details on some upcoming changes at WFLD, the Fox O&O in Chicago, following Jan Jeffcoat‘s departure last month.

Anna Davlantes and Kori Chambers are expected to co-anchor a revamped noon newscast, which will kick off sometime next month. Davlantes currently anchors from 7 to 10 a.m., while Chambers currently anchors from 4:30 to 7 a.m. Feder reports that the pair are also “in line” to anchor a 5 p.m. weekday newscast that’s being considered for launch next year.

Patrick Elwood, who has anchored the noon newscast solo since Jeffcoat’s departure, is expected to return to full-time reporting duties.

Revamping ‘Good Day Chicago,’ WFLD Begins Work on New Set, Tries Radio Simulcast

It was a busy day at Chicago’s WFLD on Thursday. As 10 technicians were notified that their positions were being eliminated, the Fox O&O started work on a brand-new studio space that is set to be completed this summer.

The new set, which will have an open look allowing anchors and reporters to roam throughout the WFLD newsroom, is part of the station’s effort to revamp its “Good Day Chicago” morning show, currently anchored by Kori Chambers and Dawn Hasbrouck in the early morning and Anna Davlantes and Corey McPherrin from 7-10 a.m.

On Thursday, “Good Day Chicago” tried out a simulcast with WTMX-FM‘s popular morning program “Eric and Kathy,” and sources say that this could become a regular feature of the show as WFLD tries to lure local viewers away from the network morning shows.

During the simulcast (video after the jump), WTMX Eric and Kathy grilled Davlantes on her recent decision to get eloped.

“If you don’t adapt in this business, you die,” one source at WFLD told TVSpy about the planned changes. Read more
