VIDEO: KPIX Shows What a Day in the Newsroom Looks Like

KPIX, the San Francisco Bay Area CBS owned station, posted an interesting video on one of its on its You Tube pages. Though its a year old, the video gives a “behind-the-scenes” look at how a newscast is put together.

You can either watch and learn or watch and look for people you might know. Either way, it’s a compact look inside the day of a big market news organization.

KCBS, KPIX Comply With Request to Stop Tweeting Dorner Updates

The San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Office asked the press to stop tweeting updates on the manhunt for Christopher Dorner Tuesday evening, saying the updates were “hindering officer safety.” Two CBS-owned stations — KCBS in Los Angeles and KPIX in San Francisco — complied with the request.

Per @sbcountyda request we are complying and will not tweet updates on #Dorner search.
— CBS Los Angeles (@CBSLA) February 12, 2013

Jim Romenesko has the memo from KPIX director of operations Jim Parker:

It sounds like there is concern that Dorner may be monitoring Twitter for information as he as holed up in a cabin at Big Bear.

After consulting with CBS Local VP Andy Lindenauer, we will going forward for now “tweet our coverage – but not details as to what’s happening.”

When the search for Dorner began last week, the LAPD asked stations to not show the “tactical movements” of police officers, citing a concern for their safety.

Ratings were up +1% in the metered markets from last year’s New York Giants vs. New England Patriots Super Bowl. The rating/share peaked at 52.9/75 from 10:30-10:45pmET.

Baltimore was the top-rated market: CBS O&O WJZ posted a rating/share of 59.6/83. New Orleans, the Super Bowl’s host city, came in second, with CBS affiliate WWL at 57.1/77. Notably, CBS-owned KPIX in San Francisco did not make the top 10.

Lee came to KPIX from Hawaii’s KGMB and, according to Lieberman, started at KPIX under the premise she would anchor.

When Lee was hired at CBS5, she believed she was promised an anchor job, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the nature of the story. Lee co-anchored the morning show for a time and was then made the station’s political reporter.

Lieberman said Lee is returning to an undisclosed station in Hawaii. TVSpy has reached out to KPIX to confirm the report but has not yet heard back.

KPIX News Van Involved in Police Chase

KPIX didn’t have too far to travel to find the aftermath of a high speed police chase through the streets of San Francisco when one of its news vans was sideswiped by the SUV the alleged thieves were driving.

The CBS O&O’s 6 p.m. anchors Allen Martin and Dana King tossed to reporter Joe Vazquez who was live on the scene minutes after the pursuit’s dramatic ending. You can watch the video of the report after the jump.

The scene unfolded when a man stole a woman’s backpack containing an iPad around 5 p.m. The suspect jumped into a silver Mercedes SUV but not before drawing the attention of dozens of witnesses who called police according to the San Francisco Chronicle who said,

The robbers didn’t help their cause by sideswiping a KPIX van as they tried to get away. The TV crew notified their assignment desk, and colleagues were quickly on the way, a CBS staffer said. The news crew had been preparing to cover a community safety meeting with police officials and city supervisors at the Bean There cafe on Steiner Street that, as the invitation indicated, was convened “in light of a recent string of cell-phone muggings and criminal activity.”

CBS Appoints New GMs in San Francisco and Chicago: Bruno Cohen to KPIX, Marty Wilke to WBBM

CBS announced two new general managers at its O&Os this morning: Bruno Cohen (pictured) will join KPIX in San Francisco, and Marty Wilke will join WBBM in Chicago.

Cohen replaces Ron Longinotti, whose departure was first reported yesterday by San Francisco media blogger Rich Leiberman. In a statement, CBS said Longinotti is “leaving the company to pursue other endeavors.”

Cohen has been the general manager at WBBM since 2008. He is a Bay Area native who was president and general manager of KOVR-KMAX, the CBS duopoly in Sacramento, for three years before moving to Chicago. In his new role, he will also oversee CBS-owned CW affiliates KBCW in San Francisco and KSTW in Seattle. continued…

After 22 Years at KRON, Sports Anchor Vern Glenn Starts Work at Rival KPIX

Vern Glenn, who has spent the past 22 and a half years at KRON, is starting work at Bay Area rival KPIX this week.

Nicknamed “Mr. Involvement” because of his penchant for throwing himself into the middle of his feature stories, Glenn will serve as weekend sports anchor and reporter at KPIX, the same role he recently held at KRON.

KPIX, a CBS O&O, was able to give Glenn a three-year contract, which KRON was unable to offer.

After they wrapped up coverage of the U.S. Open, which took place in the Bay Area over the weekend, Glenn joined Gary Radnich, his longtime sports partner at KRON, for a send-off (video inside). continued…

Court Rules That KPIX Did Not Target Older Reporters for Layoffs

An appeals court in San Francisco today ruled in favor of KPIX in the station’s long-simmering legal battle with two former reporters.

After having their age discrimination lawsuit against the CBS O&O dismissed at the beginning of last year, Bill Schechner and John Lobertini have continued to fight, but their case suffered a significant blow as the appeals court concluded that the pair of former KPIX reporters failed to show enough evidence that the station singled out their age as the reason for laying them off in 2008. continued…

‘Trailblazer’ Belva Davis to Retire From KQED After Presidential Election

KQED anchor Belva Davis will retire this fall after nearly half a century on the air in San Francisco, she announced yesterday.

Davis, the winner of eight Emmys, has anchored at CBS O&O KPIX and MyNetworkTV-affiliate KRON in addition to KQED, the Bay Area public television station. The San Francisco Chronicle calls her “an icon of Bay Area journalism.”

“I have enjoyed a unique and long career here in the Bay Area and have been witness to some of the most explosive stories in the last half century,” Davis said in a statement. “I began my career with the coverage of the 1964 elections, and I’m thrilled that I will be devoting my last months on the air to the elections of 2012.”

For the past 14 years, Davis has been host of “This Week in Northern California,” KQED’s public affairs show. Her final broadcast will be November 9. continued…
