Last Thursday, KRDO reporter James Jarman reported Catherine Wilson, a Colorado Springs grandmother, was served by the CSPD SWAT team with a felony warrant originating from Orange County, FL. The warrant turned out to be a mistake.

Jarman’s story focused on who might be to blame for the 56-year-old woman being taken into custody on a mistaken warrant. In the video, Jarman uses file footage of SWAT team members dressed in full tactical gear. See the video after the jump.

Barrett Tryon

Tryon moves to Kansas City from Colorado Springs. He was a reporter at ABC affiliate KRDO from March 2010 to July 2011. After leaving KRDO, he joined the Colorado Springs-Gazette, where he was placed on administrative leave in June after he refused to remove a post about the newspaper’s sale from his personal Facebook page. He was eventually reinstated at the newspaper but declined to return.

At WDAF, Tryon will be an interactive content producer and technology reporter.

As a massive wildfire extended its reach in Colorado Springs over the weekend, KKTV, the market’s CBS-affiliate, began providing nonstop coverage of the natural disaster.  And the station hasn’t stopped.

So far, as of this posting, KKTV, which is owned by Gray Television, has provided nearly 100 hours of continuous breaking news coverage and, with the fire doubling in size Tuesday night, there doesn’t appear to be a break in sight.

“When we first broke in just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, we had no plan as to how long we’d stay on,” KKTV news director Liz Haltiwanger told TVSpy today via email.  “We just knew our viewers needed clear information, live images, and weather forecasts right away.” continued…

Tryon, who has worked at the Gazette since April, was a reporter and digital content director at KRDO from 2010-11. After the sale of the Gazette and six other papers was announced earlier this week, Tryon linked to a Los Angeles Times article on his personal Facebook wall, highlighting a paragraph that said the new owner “hopes to spin off the smaller papers in separate deals.”

Tryon was contacted by the paper’s director of content, Carmen Boles, and told the post violated the company’s social media policy, which charges that employees must “protect the company’s goodwill, brands and business reputation.”  continued…

As part of the agreement the two organizations will share content, including news stories, photographs, slide shows and video, according to a joint statement. KRDO has moved its Southern Colorado bureau into the Chieftan‘s newsroom.

“We are thrilled to be working with the terrific team at the Chieftain to provide our viewers and readers with the most accurate and up to the minute news and weather on television, in print and online,” KRDO news director Michael Sipes said in a statement.

KRDO meteorologist Rachael Plath has seen an outpouring of  viewer support this week after video of her exclaiming “son of a bitch!” in the middle of a forecast (video above) aired live on the Colorado Springs ABC-affiliate.

“Thanks for being human and don’t sweat it,” one fan wrote on her Facebook wall. “You are great in my book.”

“I think it’s great to know you’re human. Thanks for being real,” another comment read.

Plath — who noted that the viral moment was the result of a wrong clip airing and “not a moment of frustration live” — gamely thanked viewers for their support, responding individually to many of the messages. continued…

RTDNA

KUSA (Denver), KARE (Minneapolis-St. Paul), KRDO (Colorado Springs), and WGRZ (Buffalo) had especially impressive showings this year, dominating their respective divisions in addition to winning Overall Excellence.

In a show of vindication for KARE’s departing VP of News Tom Lindner, the NBC-affiliate won 7 of the 12 categories in its division.

KTUL (Tulsa) and WVUE (New Orleans) also garnered a significant amount of awards, with their call signs showing up more than any other station in their individual divisions.
