Lindsay Shively Named Weekend Anchor at KSHB in Kansas City

Lindsay Shively is the new weekend morning anchor at Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB, Bottom Line Communications reports.

Shively joined KSHB as a multimedia journalist in 2009. She replaces Najahe Sherman, who joined WKRN in Nashville last month.

“I am excited to be able to promote Lindsay. She is a great storyteller and her bright and cheerful personality will be a nice addition to our weekend morning show,” news director Carrie Hofmann said in a statement.

Bottom Line also reports that anchor Cynthia Newsome will move from the weekend evening newscasts to the weekday midday newscasts. Amy Hawley will solo anchor the weekend evening newscasts going forward.

Assistant News Director Out at KSHB

Brett Akagi, assistant news director for KSHB, is no longer with Kansas City NBC affiliate, according to Bottom Line Communications.

Akagi came to KSHB in 2010 after working as senior video producer for the Minnesota Star Tribune. He’s also worked at KARE in Minneapolis, KSNC in Great Bend, KS, WIBW in Topeka, KS and Kansas City FOX affiliate WDAF.

In February, Carrie Hofmann was named news director at KSHB. She came to the station from WCNC in Charlotte, NC.

Najahe Sherman Joins WKRN From KSHB

Reporter-anchor Najahe Sherman is moving from Kansas City to Nashville, she announced on her blog Monday.

Sherman begins this week as anchor and reporter at WKRN, the ABC affiliate in Nashville. She comes from KSHB, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, where she was a reporter and weekend morning anchor.

Jadiann Thompson Joins KSHB From KPHO

Jadiann Thompson is joining KSHB, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, as a multimedia journalist and anchor.

Thompson comes from KPHO in Phoenix, where she worked as a fill-in anchor and MMJ. Beginning April 22, she will replace Elizabeth Alex as the 6 p.m. co-anchor.

“It will be a challenge to sit in the same chair as a trusted name like Elizabeth Alex, but I plan to earn the viewers’ respect. I want to be someone you see not only behind the anchor desk, but in the community as well,” Thompson said in a statement. “I can’t wait to get started.” [h/t Bottom Line Communications]

Morning Anchor Curtis Jay Out at KSHB

Morning anchor Curtis Jay is out at Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB, according to Bottom Line Communications.

Jay joined KSHB in 2010 as the morning and midday anchor. He has also worked at stations in Memphis, Fort Myers and Clarksburg, W.V.

A replacement has yet to be announced for Jay, who was last on the air Monday. His bio has been stripped from the KSHB website.

KSHB Adds Weekday Afternoon Newscast, Hires Meteorologist Kalee Dionne

Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB will add a weekday 4 p.m. newscast next month, according to Bottom Line Communications.

The newscast, which debuts April 8, will be anchored by Mark Clegg and Christa Dubill, along with chief meteorologist Gary Lezak.

“I am excited to be adding more news at a time when many stations across the country are cutting back. It reinforces our commitment to keep our viewers up to date on what’s happening in their community on the screen of their choice,” KSHB news director Carrie Hofmann said in a statement.

KSHB has also hired meteorologist Kalee Dionne (pictured), who is currently the morning meteorologist at WIAT in Birmingham, Ala. She will start in late April, according to Bottom Line.

KSHB Gives Live Look at Kansas City Man’s Violent Interruption of State of the City Address

Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB gave viewers of its 11:00 a.m. news more than they bargained for yesterday.

The station took a live feed from Kansas City Mayor Sly James‘ “State of the City” address just seconds before a man, later identified as Derron Black, jumped on stage, tossed a flag off the podium and interrupted James by shouting,”This man has just got through talking about exactly what the F$%# he ain’t G@#d*%$ did.”

The station cut the audio feed before anchor Curtis Jay apologized to viewers for what they just witnessed, “We, first off, want to apologize for this. This is live. Happening right now, what you’re looking at. We apologize for the profanity that was used on the air.”

Carrie Hofman Named News Director at KSHB

Carrie Hofmann has been named news director at KSHB, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City.

Hofmann comes from WCNC in Charlotte, where she has been assistant news director for two years. Prior to that, she was assistant news director at KMGH in Denver.

“Carrie has the vision and leadership skills we believe will help 41 Action News move forward,” KSHB VP-GM Brian Bracco said in a statement.

Hofmann begins at KSHB March 6. She replaces Peggy Phillip, who left the station in August. [via Bottom Line Communications]

Garrett Haake Joins KSHB in Kansas City

Garrett Haake is joining Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB, Bottom Line Communications reports.

Haake joins KSHB from NBC news, where he was most recently an embedded reporter with GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Before the election, he was an associate producer for “Nightly News.”

Haake, a graduate of Southern Methodist University, will be a reporter at KSHB. He begins on February 11.

Local Meteorologists to Guess What America Thinks for Charity

Four meteorologists from local TV stations around the country will get the chance to raise up to $50,000 for charity by guessing what America thinks.

Amber Sullins, chief meteorologist for Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV, Mark Johnson, chief meteorologist for Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS, George Flickinger, meteorologist for Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH and Gary Lezak, chief meteorologist for Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB will duke it out on TV game show “Let’s Ask America” next Thursday, January 31.

“Let’s Ask America” is a televised game show with four contestants playing over Skype. The contestants must predict how Americans answered questions like, “What did commuters say is the most difficult type of weather to drive in?” The show is produced by Scripps and Warner Bros. Telepictures and airs as a replacement for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in some markets. continued…

Elizabeth Alex Says Goodbye to KSHB

Elizabeth Alex is saying goodbye to Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB, according to Bottom Line Communications.

Alex, who joined the station in 1996, will continue to anchor the 6 p.m. newscast through the February sweeps period. After that, she will continue on with the station as a special correspondent as she focuses full-time on a job at the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.

“I thank KSHB, and the people of Kansas City for the honor of all these wonderful years on the air,” Alex told Bottom Line.

Barbara Maushard Expands Role as Hearst Television’s VP of News

Hearst Television’s Barbara Maushard is adding to her duties as vice president of news.

Maushard will oversee Hearst’s corporate news efforts, a role that was previously held by Brian Bracco. In November, Bracco was named general manager of KSHB in Kansas City.

Maushard has served in her current role since 2008. Before that, she was news director at three Hearst properties: WESH in Orlando, WISN in Milwaukee and KHBS-KHOG in Fort Smith, Ark.

“Barb has served with distinction at several Hearst stations, leading award-winning news teams,” Hearst Television chairman and CEO David J. Barrett said in a statement. “Her dedication to quality and excellence in local journalism has been instrumental in the success our stations have had in serving their local audiences.”

News Director Peggy Phillip Exits KSHB

KSHB news director Peggy Phillip has left the Kansas City NBC-affiliate, Bottom Line Communications reports.

Phillip joined the station three years ago. She has previously been news director at WMAR in Baltimore, WSTM in Syracuse and WMC in Memphis. In 2009, she was named to the RTDNA Board of Directors. She began her television career at KTVN in Reno.

Phillip’s exit comes just a month after KSHB general manager Mike Vrabac announced his retirement.

Hit-and-Run Suspect Hides in KSHB Parking Lot

Kansas City police responded to the KSHB studios early Friday evening after a hit-and-run suspect fled the scene of a nearby accident and ran into the station’s parking lot.

KSHB employees saw the suspect enter the parking lot on foot and hide underneath one of the station’s news vans. Christa Dubill, the station’s weekday evening anchor, recorded the incident on her cell phone (video above). continued…

Michelle Davidson, Michael Mackie to Join KSHB

Michelle Davidson and Michael Mackie will join KSHB in Kansas City as the co-hosts of a new daytime show launching this summer.

Davidson has previously worked at two Missouri stations: KOMU in Columbia and KYTV in Springfield. She anchored and reported at both stations. Mackie was most recently a senior writer and director at a Kansas City advertising and PR firm.

“We’re really excited about bringing this new show to our viewers,” KSHB VP-GM Mike Vrabac said in a statement. “41 Action News is continuing to develop local programming that is relevant to our community, and we’re thrilled that we were able to recruit the talents of Michelle and Michael.” [via Bottom Line Communications]
