Telemundo Stations to Add Newscast and Staff

telemundo logoStarting Monday, November 3, Telemundo will launch a weekday 5:30 p.m. half-hour newscast in 14 markets.

The NBCUniversal owned station group also said it will hire nearly 30 employees to support the expanded news schedule.

“Today’s announcement marks a new era for the Telemundo Station Group and Spanish-language news,” Manuel Martinez, president of the Telemundo Station Group said in a statement. “All of our stations have a commitment to deliver the best local breaking news and  weather to our viewers and this expansion will help.”

The new newscast will debut at Telemundo stations in Los Angeles (KVEA), New York (WNJU), Miami (WSCV), Houston (KTMD), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXTX), Chicago (WSNS), SF Bay Area (KSTS), San Antonio (KVDA), Phoenix (KTAZ), Tucson (KHRR), McAllen (KTLM), Denver (KDEN), Philadelphia (WWSI) and Las Vegas (KBLR).

Telemundo Arizona Adds Weekend Newscast

Telemundo_ArizonaKTAZ, the Telemundo owned station for Phoenix and Tucson, AZ, has added two hours of local weekend news to its lineup.

Starting Saturday, the station will air a live half hour of news at 4:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shows will be anchored by Daniel Aguirre with Ivan Valenzuela anchoring sports.

“The investment in local news, resources, personnel and cutting-edge technology demonstrates our commitment to inform and serve the local Spanish-speaking community, which has been traditionally underserved with local news,” Araceli De León, president and regional general manager, Telemundo Southwest said in a statement.

Telemundo also said the station is building a new set and hiring “a dozen additional staff members to deliver local team coverage from breaking news events and live reports from multiple locations.”

Juan Villa Named News Director at Univision O&O KTVW

Juan Villa is set to become news director of Phoenix’s KTVW.

Villa will succeed Marco Flores, who recently left KTVW to join Univision’s Los Angeles O&O KMEX.  He’ll officially join the KTVW newsroom in February.

Villa is familiar with the Phoenix market, having recently served as an executive producer at Telemundo station KTAZ.  Before joining KTAZ, Villa worked for La Voz, the city’s Spanish language newspaper, as a general assignment reporter.

Villa is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. [via Media Moves]
