KSL to Start Airing ‘SNL’ in the Fall

Salt Lake City NBC affiliate KSL will begin airing “Saturday Night Live.”

The station announced the move on its facebook page saying, “Programming Note: Starting this fall, KSL is pleased to welcome Saturday Night Live to its weekly line-up, on Saturday nights at 10:30. More changes and updates to the fall line-up are coming soon – stay with us and we’ll keep you posted!”

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, there’s always been a misunderstanding about why the station never aired the late night sketch comedy show.

When KSL became an NBC affiliate in 1995, the station didn’t want to lose its very successful late-night local sports shows. It offered to air “SNL” on Saturdays at 11:35 p.m. – an offer NBC rejected.

“It was a business decision,” Tami Ostmark, KSL’s vice president of marketing, research and promotion, told The Tribune. “That’s still the case today.” The Tribune said “Sports Beat Saturday” is no longer the ratings powerhouse it once was, which may have prompted the move. Read more

KTVX-KUCW News Set Getting an Upgrade

Nexstar’s Salt Lake City duopoly, KTVX-KUCW, is getting a new look on Monday. The redesign is timed to coincide with KTVX’s 65th anniversary, the Salt Lake Tribune reports:

The news set is getting a huge makeover. Viewers will quickly notice the new color scheme — pale green, purple-gray and orange-red. The set for “Good Things Utah” also is getting a completely new look, as well as a new focus.

“We’re going to embrace our legacy,” said Richard Doutre Jones, vice president and general manager of KTVX and sister station KUCW-Channel 30, in January. “Do you live in Utah? Then we care about you.”

Richard Doutre’Jones Named GM at Salt Lake City’s KTVX-KUCW

Nexstar Broadcasting has named Richard Doutre’Jones vice president and general manager of KTVX and KUCW, the ABC and CW affiliates in Salt Lake City.

Doutre’Jones spent 18 years at KBHK (now KBCW) in San Francisco, working as a local and national sales manager, general sales manager and station manager. In 2001, he moved to San Diego, where he became VP-GM of XETV-XDTV.  Most recently, he has served as the vice president of Jones Broadcast group while also operating RDJ Global, providing consulting and M&A advisory services to broadcast and other companies.

“With his depth of local broadcasting expertise, strong client relationships, and dedication to the local Salt Lake community, we are confident that Richard is the ideal person to lead the television and e-media operations of KTVX and KUCW,” Nexstar COO Brian Jones said in a statement.

Doutre’Jones replaces Matt Jaquint at the stations. KTVX-KUCW underwent a round of layoffs before Christmas.
