Indra Petersons Joins CNN From KABC

KABC meteorologist Indra Petersons has joined CNN as a weather anchor and correspondent, TVNewser reports.

Petersons will primarily contribute to “New Day,” CNN’s morning newscast set to launch on June 17. Her first assignment for CNN will be covering the tornado devastation from Moore this week.

Before joining KABC in 2003, Petersons worked at KEYT in Santa Barbara and KVIA in El Paso.

KVIA Adding 9:00 p.m. News to Sister Station

KVIA has announced plans to produce a 9:00 p.m. news to air on its sister station CW affiliate KVIA-DT2.

The weekday newscast will air on the El Paso ABC affiliate’s digital subchannel 7.2 and will be anchored by Stephanie Valle and meteorologist Karla Huelga.

“Since the El Paso/Las Cruces CW launched in 2007, we’ve wanted to provide the station’s viewers with news and weather,” said KVIA general manager Kevin Lovell. “Now that the station is well established, we’re ready to use ABC7’s resources to bring CW viewers a newscast that’s an hour earlier than our ABC7 10 p.m. newscast.”

The station also announced weekend morning anchor Denise Olivas will replace Valle as co-anchor of the noon news with Bob Harp. Olivas will also begin reporting for the weekday morning show, “Good Morning El Paso.”

The first newscast on the CW will air Monday, March 25.

Former El Paso Weathercaster Jim Gamble Dies

Jim Gamble, a former weathercaster for El Paso ABC-affiliate KVIA, died yesterday from pancreatic cancer. He was 60.

Gamble was a weathercaster in the El Paso market for 20 years. He spent 10 years at KVIA, five years at NBC-affiliate KTSM and five years at CBS-affiliate KDBC.

Roy Ortega, a former KVIA anchor, recalled meeting Gamble for the first time in the 1980s. “I was actually there when he walked into the newsroom for the very first time,” he told the El Paso Times. “He had an audition. He had a natural talent for being on the air.”

Meteorologist Jennifer Myers Joins KDFW

Jennifer Myers is joining KDFW in Dallas as the weekend meteorologist, the Fox O&O announced today.

Myers begins on July 24 as the meteorologist on the Saturday and Sunday morning newscasts. She comes from KVIA in El Paso, where she has been a meteorologist, reporter, fill-in anchor and web producer since 2010.

“I’m very excited about joining the FOX4 team,” Myers said in a statement. “Severe weather has always been my passion, so being in a place where I can do what I love is really something I’m looking forward to.”

Reporter Richard Jordan Out at Miami’s WSVN

Reporter Richard Jordan has left Miami Fox-affiliate WSVN.

Jordan, a Miami native, has worked at the station since March 2008. His last day was Tuesday, SFLTV.com reports.

Prior to joining WSVN, Jordan was a general assignment reporter at WKRC, the CBS-affiliate in Cincinnati. He began his career as a reporter at KVIA, the ABC-affiliate in El Paso.

Anchor Celina Avila Joins KESQ From KVIA

Celina Avila is joining KESQ, the ABC-affiliate in Palm Springs, as morning and evening anchor. Her first day will be January 3.

“I’m excited about getting home early to spend time with my boys and continuing to enjoy Southern California,” Avila wrote on Facebook.

Avila joins KESQ from KVIA, the ABC-affiliate in El Paso. Prior to joining KIVA, Avila worked at KTSM, the NBC-affiliate in El Paso, for three years. [h/t NewsBlues]

In El Paso, KTSM Advertises on Rival’s Website

KVIA general manager Kevin Lovell visited his station’s website a few days ago and to his horror, the site had been overtaken by crosstown rival KTSM.

A large banner at the top of the site displayed a photo of KTSM’s marquee anchor team along with the NBC-affiliate’s theme “First.Live.Local.” So what happened?

In a post on KVIA’s website, Lovell explains that KTSM infiltrated the site by accident. KVIA had purchased “remnant” ads from Google Adsense and the ad network was serving local ads, apparently targeted at a web user interested in TV news. Of course the big problem was that the ads were attempting to draw users away from KVIA to KTSM. continued…
