Vinita Nair Joins CBS Newspath

Vinita Nair is the newest correspondent for CBS Newspath, the network’s 24-hour television news service for CBS affiliates.

In her new role, Nair will be based in New York. She is a former co-anchor of “World News Now” and “America This Morning,” ABC’s early morning newscasts, and spent three years as a contributor for “Good Morning America.”

Before joining ABC in 2007, Nair worked as a reporter and anchor at KWGN in Denver and KOLN-KGIN in Lincoln.

“We have a brand-new set,” KDVR-KWGN anchor Deborah Takahara announced on Monday, during KWGN’s 7 p.m. newscast. “[It] really embodies our station, our brand, and our image: ‘Colorado’s Own.’”

Two KDVR News Managers Nab Assistant ND Jobs

Two news managers at Denver’s KDVR-KWGN have landed assistant news director jobs in other markets.

Ryan Minnaugh, who most recently served as executive producer of KDVR-KWGN’s evening newscasts, is joining WXIN in Indianapolis. And Marc Sternfield, KDVR-KWGN’s executive producer for digital media, has been named assistant ND at KSTU in Salt Lake City.

Both moves represent promotions within the Local TV-Tribune family. continued…

KWGN Drops Longtime Morning Anchor Angie Austin

After being part of KWGN‘s morning team for over a decade, Angie Austin has departed the the Denver CW-affiliate.

Austin told the Denver Post this week that KWGN decided not to renew her contract, which came as a surprise to her.

“When my contract expired in a few months ago, my news director (Ed Kosowski) told me he was offering me a morning anchor position, so I knew I was being renewed,” Austin told the Post via email. “When he met with me last week and told me it was my last day at the station.. to say I was surprised would be an understatement.” continued…

KVLY-KXJB Hires Two Multimedia Journalists

Two new multimedia journalists will join KVLY-KXJB in Fargo next week: Tony Ullrich (pictured) and Robert Hahn, news director Griff Potter announced in a staff memo today.

Ullrich joins KVLY-KXJB from KOMU in Columbia, MO, where he has been a multimedia journalist, weekend anchor and live truck operator since 2008. He began his television career at KMEG, the CBS-affiliate in Sioux City, IA.

Hahn joins the Fargo duopoly from Bay News 9 in St. Petersburg, where he is an anchor and multimedia journalist. He has previously worked at KWGN in Cheyenne and WFXL in Albany, GA.

Emphasizing Local News, KWGN Unveils New Look

Denver CW-affiliate KWGN has undergone a major image overhaul. The Tribune-owned station debuted a revamped set and graphics package this week, putting 2009′s ill-advised “Deuce” identity firmly in the past.

KWGN’s new “Colorado’s Own” tagline underscores a shift in focus for the station, from generic entertainment programming to local news. This shift is being overseen by veteran newsman Ed Kosowski, who was hired as VP of News of KDVR-KWGN back in June.

Upon his hiring, Kosowski told the Denver Post that he’s “very hard news oriented.”

As part of KWGN’s image overhaul, the station’s morning show introduced a new theme song, which was picked following a contest among local songwriters. [h/t NewscastStudio]

New KDVR-KWGN Boss Ed Kosowski: ‘I’m Very Hard News Oriented’

Ed Kosowski, who last week was appointed vice president of news at Denver duopoly KDVR-KWGN, says that he plans to shift the stations’ focus from entertainment to hard news.

“If you look at my track record, I’m very hard news oriented,” Kosowski, who comes to Denver from CNBC, told the Denver Post recently, adding that he sees “huge opportunities to come in with a fresh set of eyes.”

KDVR-KWGN previously employed Carolyn Kane, a veteran of reality shows and infotainment programming, as VP of content overseeing the stations’ move towards lighter fare. Shortly after Kane joined KDVR-KWGN, the CW-affiliate rebranded itself as “The Deuce” and dumped the long-standing 9 p.m. newscast in favor of the 7 p.m. 18-to-34-year-olds-centric “News on the Deuce.” continued…

Kellie MacMullan Set to Join KCRA Anchor Desk

Kellie MacMullan, who currently anchors KWGN‘s 7 p.m. newscast in Denver, is set to join the anchor desk of Sacramento’s KCRA.

“KCRA is very excited to have found someone with Kellie’s journalistic excellence and anchoring experience,” said KCRA news director Anzio Williams. “She will be a valuable leader in our newsroom and someone our viewers will quickly come to trust and respect.”

MacMullan, a native of Colorado, has been anchoring the Tribune-owned CW-affiliate’s 7 p.m. newscast since it launched in 2009.

“I’m very grateful to KCRA 3 for this unbelievable opportunity,” MacMullan said. “I can’t wait to be a part of the best news team in Sacramento.”

MacMullan’s first day with KCRA is scheduled for June 27th.
