Telemundo Stations to Add Newscast and Staff

telemundo logoStarting Monday, November 3, Telemundo will launch a weekday 5:30 p.m. half-hour newscast in 14 markets.

The NBCUniversal owned station group also said it will hire nearly 30 employees to support the expanded news schedule.

“Today’s announcement marks a new era for the Telemundo Station Group and Spanish-language news,” Manuel Martinez, president of the Telemundo Station Group said in a statement. “All of our stations have a commitment to deliver the best local breaking news and  weather to our viewers and this expansion will help.”

The new newscast will debut at Telemundo stations in Los Angeles (KVEA), New York (WNJU), Miami (WSCV), Houston (KTMD), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXTX), Chicago (WSNS), SF Bay Area (KSTS), San Antonio (KVDA), Phoenix (KTAZ), Tucson (KHRR), McAllen (KTLM), Denver (KDEN), Philadelphia (WWSI) and Las Vegas (KBLR).

Dallas-Fort Worth Telemundo Station Adds Weekend Weather Anchor

gonzales croppedTeresa Gonzalez will join KXTX Telemundo 39 in Dallas-Fort Worth as weekend weather anchor.

Starting Saturday, Gonzalez will join Nancy Leal and sports anchor Erik Mora for the 4:30 and 10:00 p.m. shows.

“We are excited to welcome Teresa to Telemundo 39,” Karen Mendez, VP of News for Telemundo 39 said in a statement. “I am confident she will help us deliver the best live and breaking weather coverage our viewers seek and deserve.”

Gonzalez comes to Telemundo 39 from KUNS in Seattle, Wash. where she was news and weather anchor. She has also worked as a producer and morning show host for Azetca America in Eugene, Ore. and as a reporter and producer at KMTR.  She started her career at KEZI as a producer.

Karen Mendez Named VP of Content at KXTX

kxtx logoKaren Mendez is joining KXTX, the Telemundo station in Dallas, as the vice president of content. In her new role, Mendez will oversee the local news operation and report to John Trevino, the president and general manager of the station.

“Karen is an experienced leader with a track record of improving local news and a strong commitment to the Hispanic community,” Trevino said in a statement. “She is the right person to lead our Emmy award winning team.”

Mendez moves to Dallas from Washington, D.C., where she was the news director for Unvision’s WFDC. She will officially join KXTX on June 16.

Meteorologist Irene Sans Joins KTMD

Meteorologist Irene Sans is joining KTMD, the Telemundo station in Houston, according to MediaMoves.

Sans begins as chief meteorologist on January 28. Since 2010, she has been a Telemundo meteorologist seen on WSCV in Miami and KXTX in Dallas.

“Houston is a great city, with great people, lots of culture, and has much to offer in the science field. I am excited to enter a new phase in my career and hope to create awareness among Hispanics about meteorology and the importance of it in our lives,” Sans told MediaMoves.

 

Manuel Abud Named President of Telemundo Stations

Manuel Abud has been named president of the Telemundo Station Group.

Abud is a longtime Telemundo executive who most recently served as president and general manager of the company’s Dallas station, KXTX.  He is replacing Ronald Gordon, who was recently named chairman of ZGS Communications, which owns the largest group of independent stations affiliated with Telemundo.

“Manuel is an accomplished media executive and has been a vital part of our success for many years,” said Telemundo Media president Emilio Romano. “His impressive track record at Telemundo, together with his strong operational skills and deep management expertise, make him the ideal candidate to continue the great work Ron has done at our stations.”

Abud’s first day on the job will be January 1st.
