Another Denver News Director Says Goodbye

wews_304KMGH news director Jeff Harris has announced he is leaving the Scripps owned Denver ABC affiliate to work as news director at Scripps’ Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS.

Joanne Ostrow, TV Critic for The Denver Post reports Harris told the newsroom Wednesday. WEWS interim station manager Lana Durban Scott told TVSpy, Harris will start October 6.

“This is all things coming together at the same time,” Harris told The Post. “It’s a great opportunity for me personally and a perfect match for the company. Everything is aligned. It is incredibly bittersweet because of the affection I have for Denver.”

On Monday, KDVR-KWGN news director Ed Kosowski announced he was leaving the station when his contract is up next week.

When News Breaks, Networks Increasingly Turn to Affiliates

TVNewsCheck takes a look at the relationship between national networks and their affiliates during breaking news situations and find that networks are increasingly looking to local stations for regional expertise:

Al Prieto, VP of ABC NewsOne, the network’s affiliate news service, says it’s an important alliance to nurture. “We know a lot, but the local stations are on the ground; they are covering their cities,” he says. “When the value of that relationship kicks in, it pays off.”

Despite the mutual benefits, cooperation has not always been a given.

“It used to be that networks would sort of parachute into our backyards and we wouldn’t even know they were there,” says Mike St. Peter, the news director at NBC-owned WVIT Hartford-New Haven, Conn. (DMA 30), which won a Peabody for its coverage of the Newtown shootings late last year.

“The networks didn’t always let the local stations know what they were doing and they didn’t seem to care what we were doing,” he says. Read more

Scripps Taps WPTV News Director Jeff Brogan to Oversee Content for All Stations

Jeff Brogan is leaving his post as news director at WPTV to oversee news strategy and content development for all of Scripps’ 19 stations.

Scripps announced today that Brogan has been named senior director of news strategy and operations. In the role, Brogan will work in tandem with Lana Durban Scott, Scripps’ current senior director of news strategy and operations, on helping the company’s stations develop their content and strategic plans.

Brogan joined WPTV, Scripps’ NBC-affiliate in West Palm Beach, in 2010. The station is now searching for his replacement as news director. Read more
