Larry Hatteberg Leaving KAKE After 51Years

Larry Hatteberg has decided to call it quits at Wichita ABC affiliate KAKE after 51 years.

“KAKE TV is the only job I’ve had in my adult life,” Hatteberg said in a statement on the station website. “But five decades is long enough even at the job I love. At this point in my career, I’m looking for a bit more freedom to pursue the video and still photography projects that I want, without the deadlines that TV news brings.”

Hatteberg started at the station on May 23, 1963.

Said Hatteberg, “I knew if I didn’t make the decision now, I would always look back on my life and I would always ask the question, ‘What if?’”

His last show will be the 10:00 p.m. news on Tuesday, November 25.

KAKE Shuffles Morning and Evening Anchors, Welcomes New Meteorologist

Viewers of Gray Television’s KAKE might be forgiven if it takes them a little time to remember the changes taking place at the Wichita ABC affiliate.

Anchor Mike Iuen and meteorologist Ben Pringle have been moved from the morning shift to weekend evenings. Iuen replaces Larry Hatteberg. Hatteberg, who moved to weekdays to replace Jeff Herndon who recently left for Chicago’s WFLD, told TVSpy starting this week he’ll anchor the 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts.

The station also welcomed new meteorologist Frank Waugh, who returns to his home state of Kansas by way of Gray’s South Bend, IN, station WNDU. Waugh joins Jemelle Holopirek who remains on the mornings.

Iuen told TVSpy, KAKE Management’s response to our question about why he was being moved was this: “We are expanding newscasts and with the Sunday 10 pm show being the most watched show of the week, we need a strong team there, hence Mike and Ben.”

KAKE Adds Weekend, Afternoon Newscasts

Wichita ABC affiliate KAKE has added two new newscasts, one on Sunday mornings and one at 4 p.m. on weekdays, to its lineup.

The Sunday morning newscast, which debuted yesterday, is anchored by Annette Lawless with meteorologist Blake Smith. The 4 p.m. newscast, anchored by Larry Hatteberg and Deb Farris, will debut this afternoon.

“The addition of these two local programs further demonstrates our commitment to local news,” KAKE general manager Dan Wall said in a statement.

The station is currently searching for a replacement for Jeff Herndon, who signed off from the anchor desk last week. Herndon is headed to WFLD in Chicago, where he will co-anchor the evening newscasts.
