Julie Chang Back on KTTV

Julie Chang is back on KTTV after recovering from brain surgery in November.

Chang showed the scan of her brain which revealed the tumor on air. Anchor Steve Edwards described it as the being the size of a clementine.

Chang told Edwards and co-anchors Lisa Breckenridge and Maria Quiban, “To put it simply California saved my life.” Chang said she took up surfing when she moved from New York to California. She said she banged her face on her surfboard, got a CT scan to make sure she hadn’t broken anything and discovered she had a brain tumor.

On set, Chang talked about the surgery and the symptoms she experienced before the tumor was found. She said her eyesight has been the only casualty of the tumor saying, “I’m 100 percent back with the exception of my vision.”

Los Angeles Stations Go Live for Endeavour Arrival

As the space shuttle Endeavour made its final flight around Los Angeles Friday afternoon, every major station in the region was carrying live coverage of its arrival.

KNBC anchors Michael Brownlee and Kathy Vara began anchoring coverage just before 9:30amPT. They were joined by Colleen Williams at Griffith Observatory, John Cadiz Klemack in Palmdale, Sean Murphy at the Santa Monica Pier, Ted Chen at Edwards Air Force Base, Toni Guinyard and Chuck Henry at LAX, Patrick Healy at the Nasa Propulsion Center and Antonio Castelan in El Segundo.

KTTV had several anchors participating: Phil Shuman, Carlos Amezcua, Araksya Karapetyan, Lisa Breckenridge and Jeff Michael. Meteorologist Maria Quiban and Pablo Pereira handled the weather reports, and reporters were live across Los Angeles, including Bob DeCastro and Gigi Graciette at LAX, Mar Yvette at a restaurant near LAX and Gina Silva at Griffith Observatory. LA Stations Go Live as Bank Robbers Lead Police on High-Speed Chase

All the local stations in Los Angeles devoted special coverage to a high-speed pursuit in Los Angeles this morning. Four men who held up a bank in the Santa Clarita Valley led police through the streets of downtown LA, throwing fistfuls of cash out the window of the moving vehicle as they tried to evade capture.

KTLA morning anchor Frank Buckley was the first to report the news at 10:34amPT, breaking in to “Who Wants to be a Millionare?”

KNBC interrupted the fourth hour of “Today” with the news at 10:40amPT, with Kathy Vara anchoring. KCAL noon anchors David Gonzales and Sandra Mitchell were next at 10:42amPT.

KABC followed the news for the entirety of its regularly-scheduled 11 a.m. newscast, anchored by Phillip Palmer and Leslie Sykes. KTTV anchors Jeff Michael and Lisa Breckenridge first reported the news at at 11:42amPT, shortly after the chase came to an end with an arrest. KTTV Demonstrates a New Way to Watch TV

Fox Networks SVP for corporate development Erik Moreno stopped by KTTV on Friday to demonstrate Dyle Live Mobile TV, a device backed by Fox, NBC and several other broadcasters.

Moreno talked to Lisa Breckenridge, a reporter for the Los Angeles Fox O&O, about the device, which broadcasts over airwaves specifically reserved for television. Users are able to watch programming without 3G, 4G or WiFi. Read more

On ‘Good Day LA,’ KTTV’s Steve Edwards Shaves His Goatee For Charity

KTTV’s Steve Edwards shaved his goatee on “Good Day LA” this morning to raise awareness for Enrich LA, an organization that promotes healthy eating by putting edible gardens in public schools (video above).

“Kids, don’t watch! This is ugly!” Edwards joked as KTTV’s Lisa Breckenridge and guest-host Julie Moran brandished electric razors.

KTTV Names Jeff Michael Anchor of 5 p.m. Newscast

KTTV‘s brand-new 5 p.m. newscast, slated to launch next Monday on the Fox owned-and-operated station in Los Angeles, officially has an anchor: veteran KTTV personality Jeff Michael (pictured, left).

Michael has been with KTTV as a reporter and weekend anchor since 1998. He will be joined on the 5 p.m. broadcast — which news director Kingsley Smith has made a top priority — by reporters Liz Habib and Ed Laskos, as well as entertainment anchor Lisa Breckenridge.

The hour-long broadcast, which will feature opinions and analysis on local issues, will follow Anderson Cooper‘s syndicated daytime talk show “Anderson,” which also debuts next week. Chris Lemire, a former Fox News Channel producer, will be the newscast’s executive producer.
