WDEF’s Luther Masingill Dies at 92

In Chattanooga, Luther Masingill was such an icon he was rarely called by anything other than “Luther.” The iconic newsman died Sunday night after a short illness. He was 92.

Masingill started working at WDEF Radio in 1940, and added duties at CBS affiliate WDEF-TV when the station signed on in 1954:

“To have the fortitude to be on the air for this long you have to have a love of people and a love of country and a love of God, and you have to keep your private life to yourself and present yourseld as a caring person and Luthers was that.

“Luther holds a lot of records in broadcasting that will never be topped.”

Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said in a prepared statement that “Luther is a Hamilton County icon, not only for his decades of broadcasting service, but for his community efforts throughout his memorable life.”

Chattanooga’s WDEF Honors Luther Masingill For 70 Years In Broadcasting

WDEF, the CBS-affiliate in Chattanooga, is honoring local legend Luther Masingill for his 70 years in broadcasting today.

Masingill began his journalism career as an announcer for WDEF radio. The station’s owner talked Masingill, then a gas station attendant, into a job as the station’s telephone receptionist. After hearing his voice, employees at the station convinced him to make a demo tape; he was hired as an announcer at the station in 1941.

In 1954, Masingill began his job as a television anchor at the brand-new WDEF; he still contributes to both the radio and television stations today. According to the station’s website, he is believed to be the only anchor who reported on-air on both the Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 attacks.  Read more
