10 Local Stations Win SPJ Awards

Several local stations have won Sigma Delta Chi awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Awards were given to a small-market and large-market station in five categories — breaking news coverage, documentaries, feature reporting, investigative reporting and public service in television journalism.

Large market winners were WISH in Indianapolis, KLAS in Las Vegas, News 12 Westchester, KPHO in Phoenix and WIVB in Buffalo. Small market station winners were WGXA in Macon, GA, KOMU in Columbia, KCRG in Cedar Rapids, WVUE in New Orleans and WTWO in Terre Haute, IN.

Janice Park moves to her hometown as she joins Baltimore Fox-affiliate WBFF as a reporter. Park comes from Lexington’s WLEX.

Annette Newell joins Raleigh’s WNCN as a reporter and fill-in anchor. Newell comes to Raleigh from the New Bern-Greenville-Washington, NC market, where she co-anchored the 5, 6, and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts for WCTI.

Jeff Eliasoph returns to TV as the morning co-anchor for KWWL, an NBC-affiliate serving Waterloo-Cedar Rapids, IA. Eliasoph previously worked at Cleveland’s WOIO, Austin’s KEYE, and Dallas’s KXAS.

Mark Geary moves to the Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem, NC market where he’ll work as a reporter for CBS-affiliate WFMY. Geary comes from KCRG in Cedar Rapids, where he worked as a reporter and also wrote for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Read more
