Martha Sugalski Leaves WESH in Orlando

Orlando NBC affiliate WESH announced today anchor Martha Sugalski has left the station. The Orlando Sentinel quoted WESH general manager Jim Carter:

“Martha Sugalski has been an important member of the WESH News Team. While we made every effort to keep her at the station, she ultimately decided to move in a different direction and we thank her for her contributions during the past eight years.”

Sugalski joined WESH from WTVJ in Miami in 2006, and has been the station’s main anchor since 2008. The station invested heavily in promoting Sugalski’s personal story a year ago, when she became pregnant with triplets, who were born last June. In recent months, ratings for WESH have been highly competitive — beating longtime market leader WFTV at six p.m., suggesting Sugalski may have been poached by another Orlando station, as Hal Bodeker reports:

One rumor sweeping the local media has Sugalski going to WFTV-Channel 9.

“I really can’t comment on that,” said WFTV General Manager Shawn Bartelt. “We don’t comment on competitors’ talent, contracts. We just don’t. She’s very talented. We wish her the very best, We know she’s going to have a great future.”

Brett Connolly Named Anchor of WKCF 10 p.m. Newscast

connolly_304With Syan Rhodes leaving WESH-WKCF, Brett Connolly has been named anchor of the 10 p.m. newscast on WKCF, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Connolly joined WESH earlier this year. He will continue to anchor the 5 p.m. newscast on NBC affiliate WESH alongside Martha Sugalski. Before moving to Orlando, Connolly was the morning anchor at WFXT, the Fox-owned station in Boston.

When Connolly joined WESH in February, general manager Jim Carter said he is a “tremendous journalist, and we are thrilled to have a person of his caliber join our anchor and reporting team.”

WESH Reports on Bear That Broke Into Anchor Martha Sugalski’s House

Orlando local stations have had some trouble with bears recently. A few weeks ago, a bear found its way into WOFL reporter Holly Bristow‘s stand-up location (while she was reporting on, yes, bears) and this week, a bear broke into WESH anchor Martha Sugalski‘s house.

WESH reporter Dave McDaniel reported on the incident at Sugalski’s house last night (video above). “When I saw it, I yelled at it, and it did turn and run the other direction,” Sugalski’s husband said.

Meredith McDonough to Mornings, Syan Rhodes to Evenings at WESH-WKCF

Orlando NBC-affiliate WESH is shaking up its anchor lineup starting next month, according to the Orlando Sentinel‘s Hal Boedeker.

Syan Rhodes, who anchors from 4:30 to 7 a.m., will shift to the 10 p.m. newscast on WKCF, the CW-affiliated sister station to WESH. Rhodes will be replaced on the morning newscast by Meredith McDonough, the weekend evening anchor.

News director Bob Longo told Boedeker that the move was made so Rhodes could ease the workload of evening anchors Jim Payne and Martha Sugalski, who anchor more than three hours daily between the two stations. The changes will go into effect August 6. Read more
