Greg Easterly Named GM of Tribune’s WGN

wgn-logoGreg Easterly has been named general manager of WGN, Tribune’s CW affiliate in Chicago, Robert Feder reports.

“Greg is a proven leader, both at the head of a station and in the newsroom, and he has a keen understanding of the management and operations of a legacy station with market dominance,” Tribune Broadcasting president Larry Wert said in a statement. “WGN programs a powerful schedule of news, sports and entertainment for itself and CLTV, with more news than any other Chicago station — I’m confident WGN will continue its growth and success under Greg’s expert guidance.”

Easterly comes from WJW in Cleveland, where he has been general manager since 2007. Tribune added WJW to its station portfolio as part of the Local TV acquisition in December.

“I truly feel like one of the most fortunate broadcasters in the country – to first be a part of a powerhouse legacy station like WJW and work with the great people there, and now to be able to take the next step to WGN, another legacy station with a rich history and a top-ranked news product,” Easterly said.

WGN has been without a general manager since Marty Wilke left the station in 2012.

Chicago Media Writer Questions WBBM Coverage of Reporter’s DUI

savini_mugshotRobert Feder has set his sights on what he’s saying is a lack of transparency in WBBM‘s handling of Dave Savini‘s recent arrest for DUI.

The Chicago media writer takes the the CBS owned station to task for not reporting or commenting about the arrest of its own investigative reporter on its website or on-air.

Feder said he did get an email message from a WBBM spokesperson after asking GM Marty Wilke for comment, “At this time, we have declined all requests for comment and are referring all press inquiries to Dave’s attorney.” Feder wrote that Savini’s attorney has also refused to comment.

It strikes me as the height of hypocrisy for a station that demands answers from everyone else not to respond to legitimate inquiries about one of its own employees.

Remember that the next time you see Savini, in all his self-righteous arrogance, chasing after some unwitting target who doesn’t want to talk to him. Or the next time CBS 2 makes a big deal about a minor celebrity who gets in trouble.

“Original Reporting” my ass.

TVSpy was referred to Savini’s attorney by a CBS spokesperson when we asked about Feder’s column.

Steve Farber Named Acting General Manager of WGN

After today’s general manager shake-up in the Chicago market, Tribune Broadcasting has moved swiftly to fill the role left vacant by departing WGN general manager Marty Wilke.

Steve Farber will take over immediately as acting general manager of the Chicago CW affiliate. He is the current vice president of programming operations for Tribune. Farber steered the integration of WGN and CLTV, Tribune’s 24-hour cable news operation in Chicago, as the channel’s vice president of operations in 2009.

“Steve Farber is the perfect choice to step in now and lead the talented people at WGN-TV,” Tribune president Nils Larsen said in a statement.  “He’s very familiar with the station’s staff and operations and can assume his new responsibilities without missing a beat.” Read more

CBS Appoints New GMs in San Francisco and Chicago: Bruno Cohen to KPIX, Marty Wilke to WBBM

CBS announced two new general managers at its O&Os this morning: Bruno Cohen (pictured) will join KPIX in San Francisco, and Marty Wilke will join WBBM in Chicago.

Cohen replaces Ron Longinotti, whose departure was first reported yesterday by San Francisco media blogger Rich Leiberman. In a statement, CBS said Longinotti is “leaving the company to pursue other endeavors.”

Cohen has been the general manager at WBBM since 2008. He is a Bay Area native who was president and general manager of KOVR-KMAX, the CBS duopoly in Sacramento, for three years before moving to Chicago. In his new role, he will also oversee CBS-owned CW affiliates KBCW in San Francisco and KSTW in Seattle. Read more

WGN Anchor Mark Suppelsa Will Seek Treatment for Alcohol Addiction

Mark Suppelsa, the 5 and 9 p.m. anchor at WGN, has announced that he will take a month off from the Chicago CW-affiliate to be treated for alcohol addiction. Suppelsa shared the news with WGN staffers in a note on Friday:

I’m driving soon with my family to Hazelden in Minnesota where they’ll drop me off for a month long alcohol recovery program. I have felt for some time that this would become necessary and I’ve now crossed a bridge in my life where I want and need to do this. It’s my choice. No one is forcing me to do it.

Simply put, I have been abusing alcohol at the end of my work day as my family slept. It was my secret and I became very accomplished at hiding it. I do my best to function at a high level and I know that it is my responsibility to correct anything that potentially interferes with my family or my work. Read more
