Stations in Seattle had extended local coverage of the Seahawks’ victory in Super Bowl XLVIII Sunday. After the national postgame coverage, David Rose and Marni Hughes anchored from 7:22 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. They were joined by Matt Lorch, sports director Aaron Levine from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and several reporters in Seattle covering the local celebrations.

CBS affiliate KIRO reported the news of the Seahawks victory during its regularly-scheduled 6:30 p.m. newscast. Monique Ming Laven anchored until 7:30 p.m. and the station was back on the air from 9 to 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. to midnight. Chris Francis reported from MetLife Stadium for KIRO.

WHDH’s Michelle Relerford Set to Join WMAQ

Michelle Relerford, a weekend anchor and reporter at Boston’s WHDH, is leaving the station to join WMAQ in Chicago.

Relerford will start at WMAQ — Chicago’s NBC O&O — on September 6. She joins the station as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor. This will not be her first time reporting in the Chicago market — prior to joining WHDH, Relerford was a freelance reporter at WFLD, the Fox O&O. She has also reported at WEWS in Cleveland, WNDU in South Bend and WBOC in Salisbury, MD.

Relerford is the third on-air personality to depart from the Sunbeam-owned WHDH this month. The station is currently auditioning in-house for replacement anchors for Frances Rivera, who is joining WPIX, and Matt Lorch, who is joining KCPQ.

WHDH Auditions Current Anchors For Seats Vacated by Frances Rivera and Matt Lorch

An extensive search is underway to fill the open anchor seats at Boston’s WHDH, according to The Boston Globe. The station is testing out in-house talent to fill anchor positions vacated by Frances Rivera, who was the late evening anchor, and Matt Lorch, who was the early evening anchor at the Sunbeam-owned NBC affiliate.

The station has been heavily rotating its normal anchor lineup, switching Anne Allred (left), Amanda Grace, Adam Williams and Sorboni Banerjee between weekday and weekend mornings and evenings to test the talent in a variety of different positions.

“We feel like we have a lot of good options both internally and externally,” WHDH VP-GM Chris Wayland told The Globe. He said the station is looking at a variety of factors, including viewer feedback, focus group data and on-air chemistry with Kim Khazei, who currently anchors the evening broadcast.

Rivera and Lorch both announced their departure this month — Rivera on July 14 and Lorch on July 21. Rivera will join New York City’s WPIX, while Lorch will head west to join KCPQ in Seattle.

WHDH’s Matt Lorch Set to Join KCPQ in Seattle

WHDH evening anchor Matt Lorch is leaving Boston and heading west for an anchor position at KCPQ in Seattle, TVSpy has learned.

“We are very excited to welcome Matt Lorch home to Seattle,” KCPQ news director Jon Brady confirmed to TVSpy in an email. “We’re all looking forward to having him on the team.”

Lorch is a Washington native and a graduate of the University of Washington. He will anchor the 5 p.m. news at the Seattle Fox affiliate beginning September 12. At WHDH, Lorch anchored the early evening broadcasts and contributed to the 11 p.m. news as a reporter. He has been at the Sunbeam-owned NBC affiliate since 2006.

“As a veteran of Sunbeam myself, I know that anyone who comes out of that shop knows news and can handle anything we throw at him,” Brady said.
