Stations Ramp Up Political Coverage Ahead of Midterms

local newsroom_304x200TVNewsCheck has an in-depth look at how station groups are preparing for the midterm elections. “Debates, roundtables, aggressive campaign beat reporting and political fact-checking will be more prevalent on-air between Labor Day and Election Day than they have in the past,” Diana Marszalek writes:

It’s particularly notable that the activity is occurring in a mid-term election year, since local TV has traditionally paid little attention to non-presidential politics long considered “dull and boring to a lot of stations,” says RTDNA Executive Director Mike Cavender.

Cavender says he’s not surprised that local broadcasters are ramping things up considering they are serving a progressively more disgruntled electorate. “Stations read that as a heightened interest in how the November mid-term elections turn out,” he says. “So they are going to make them increasingly important.” Read more

Three Indianapolis Stations Are Without News Directors

Since August, three out of the four news directors in Indianapolis have exited their posts. The Indianapolis Business Journal takes a look at the unusual timing of the vacancies and talks to the one remaining news director, WXIN’s Lee Rosenthal, about the departures:

“I ran a TV news operation for 25 years, and I do not recall ever having seen a market, any market, that has had three news directors gone at one time,” said Mike Cavender, executive director of Radio Television Digital News Association, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association. “It will be interesting to see what impact these new hires will have coming on board around the same time.”

“It’s certainly an unusual situation, but it doesn’t totally surprise me,” said Dave Rust, the former director of broadcast and electronic media at Indiana University and a nine-year TV news veteran. “That job today is a pressure cooker.” Read more

Former WGCL News Director Mike Cavender Named Executive Director of RTDNA

Local news veteran Mike Cavender has been named executive director of the Radio Television Digital News Association and Foundation.

Cavender is a former director of news and public affairs at WGCL in Atlanta, as well as vice president of news at WUSA in Washington, DC and WTSP in Tampa. Most recently, he was the vice president of client solutions for Synaptic Digital, a media creation and distribution platform.

“Throughout my news career, I’ve benefited greatly from the support and guidance of the RTDNA/F,” Cavender said in a statement. “It’s a tremendous honor to lead this great organization that has for decades been so important to me and thousands of electronic journalists.”
