Nexstar Ousts KLRT GM, Reveals Plans to Merge Facilities with KARK

Nexstar Broadcasting wasted little time in making changes to Mission Broadcasting’s newly acquired Little Rock stations KLRT (FOX) and KASN (CW).

KLRT general manager Chuck Spohn was let go the day the sale closed while Nexstar made public its plans to merge the stations facilities with its NBC affiliate KARK.

Spohn told TVSpy, “It has been a privilege and pleasure to have successfully managed the FOX16 team for the past 15+years. This team has produced a fantastic product – something we are all very proud of. I wish everyone there continued success as they move forward with this transition to new ownership.”

Mission Broadcasting closed Thursday on a $60 million deal to buy both KLRT and KASN from Newport Television. Nexstar Broadcasting entered into an outside services agreement with Mission, essentially giving Nexstar control of the stations. Nexstar also owns KARK. Read more

Three Newsroom Managers Depart Little Rock’s KARK

Three newsroom managers have left Little Rock’s KARK this month. News director Rob Heverling, assistant news director Jeff Whatley and executive producer Stephanie Jackson all ended their employment with the NBC-affiliate on March 2, according to ArkansasBusiness.com.

KARK general manager Mike Vaughn confirmed the three are no longer employed at the station, but did not address the circumstances behind their departures.

“It’s our company policy that we can’t comment on personnel issues,” he said, noting that the positions were not eliminated and that the station is searching for replacements. Read more

KARK Names Austin Kellerman News Director

Austin Kellerman has been named news director at KARK, the Little Rock NBC-affiliate announced this week.

Kellerman comes to KARK after serving as news director at KTAB-KRBC in Abilene, TX.  Before Abilene, Kellerman worked as the morning show executive producer at CBS O&O KTVT in Dallas and, before that, as an executive producer at KTAL in Shreveport.

The move represents a promotion within Nexstar Broadcasting.  KARK and KTAB-KRBC, as well as KTAL, are owned by Nexstar.

“Austin has done a tremendous job in the company and has proven himself as both a leader and an innovator,” KARK vice president and general manager Mike Vaughn said in a statement.  “Austin’s enthusiasm and passion are a great fit for the KARK team.” Read more

Man Found Dead in Bathtub with KARK Meteorologist Brett Cummins

Meteorologist Brett Cummins, who has been with KARK since 2001, was questioned by police on Monday after he was found asleep in a bathtub along with a dead man wearing a dog collar.

Christopher Barbour, a resident of the house where Cummins was found with the dead body, told police that he witnessed Cummins and the man–a friend of his named Dexter Paul Williams–drinking and snorting illegal narcotics on Sunday night. Barbour, Cummins, and Williams spent time together in a jacuzzi bathtub before Barbour left the pair alone and went to sleep on a couch in the living room.

When Barbour awoke the next morning, he heard snoring coming from the bathroom and entered to find Cummins asleep in the bathtub–now empty of water–with Williams’s body slumped behind him.  When Cummins eventually awoke, he discovered that Williams was not breathing and his face was discolored. Nexstar Taps Mike Vaughn to Lead KARK-KARZ

Nexstar has promoted Mike Vaughn, the vice president and general manager of KNWA-KFTA in Fayetteville-Ft. Smith, to VP-GM of KARK-KARZ, the company’s Little Rock duopoly.
