WFTS Ousts News Director and Assistant News Director

WFTS-304Both the news director and assistant news director Tampa ABC affiliate WFTS have been let go.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal reports, GM Nick Nicholson told staff in an email that news director Bill McFarland and assistant news director Michele Murray “were no longer with the television station. We wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

Sources tell TVSpy the firings come in the aftermath of last month’s story about WFTS reporter Cameron Polom finding a child who had been reported missing.

The day after ten-year-old Paul Fagan was reported missing by his parents, Polom was walking through the boy’s neighborhood and saw him standing near a fence. Polom promptly turned him over to deputies.

Sources tell TVSpy that McFarland and Murray were not happy with how Polom handled the child’s return and thought he should have milked it for more exposure for the Scripps-owned station. An internal review of the situation was launched leading to today’s dismissals. We’ve reached out to WFTS GM Nicholson and Polom for comment but have not heard back. We will update when we do.

Tara Hitchcock Will Leave KTVK After 15 Years

Tara Hitchcock, who has been at KTVK in Phoenix for 15 years, announced yesterday on Twitter that she is leaving the station, and her final broadcast is this morning.

Hitchcock told The Arizona Republic that she informed Nick Nicholson, the station’s president and general manager, of her decision on Tuesday morning. “I wanted to do the best thing for Nick and the best thing for the station,” she said. “They were incredible to me and, quite frankly, I’m getting the better end of the deal. They’re honoring my contract and Nick has been awesome through this whole thing.”

Hitchcock, who has anchored the KTVK morning show since 1997, said she has no immediate future plans, but intends to stay in the area. “This is not a sad thing,” she told the Republic. “To be given 15 years of having so much fun is a blessing, and I feel very fortunate.”
