Raycom Names Sandy Breland GM of WVUE

wvue_304Raycom Media has named Sandy Breland vice president and general manager of WVUE in New Orleans.

Breland is charged with leading the transition as Raycom begins providing operational services to the New Orleans FOX affiliate Monday.

WVUE’s parent company announced last month it had entered into a shared services agreement with Raycom.

“Sandy is the perfect choice to lead and grow this station,” Paul McTear, president and CEO of Raycom said in a statement. “She knows New Orleans and served the people of that community during some of the more challenging times in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.”

Breland, who replaces retiring GM Joe Cook, had served as news director at rival station WWL for 11 years. Before coming to WVUE, she was the GM at Raycom’s Baton Rouge station WAFB.

Breland will continue in her other role as regional VP overseeing Raycom’s stations WAFB, KSLA in Shreveport and KPLC in Lake Charles, LA.

Raycom COO Wayne Daugherty Set to Retire

raycom_logoWayne Daugherty, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Raycom Media, will retire at the end of this year after 44 years working in television.

Wayne’s dedication and commitment to Raycom Media throughout the years has played a substantial role in the growth and success of our organization,” Raycom president and CEO Paul McTear said in a statement. “Although we will miss him, he has more than earned the right to spend more time with his family, friends, volunteer efforts, and hobbies.”

Daugherty has worked at Raycom since 1997. He has held his current position since 2006.

Raycom to Operate New Orleans FOX affiliate

raycom_wvueWVUE has announced its parent company Louisiana Media Company has reached an agreement in principle to a shared services agreement with Raycom Media.

According to the station the SSA, “will allow Louisiana Media Company to “join hands” with the strongest regional television group in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, Raycom Media. The shared services agreement between WVUE Fox 8 and Raycom Media will permit Raycom Media to provide operational services for the station, under the ultimate control of Louisiana Media.”

The New Orleans FOX affiliate was rumored to have been sold in October when Raycom investor Retirement Systems of Alabama told its members in a newsletter Raycom was close to closing on the sale of WVUE for $55.6 million. At the time, WVUE told the New Orleans Times-Picayune, “There is no sale pending. The station is not for sale.” Read more

Raycom Stations Go Dark on Dish Network

Raycom Media stations in 36 markets have gone dark on Dish Network after the two companies failed to reach an new carriage agreement by midnight Wednesday.

“We are ready to listen to a fair proposal from Raycom to bring this impasse to a swift end,” Dish director of programming Sruta Vootukuru said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the broadcaster has not been willing to pursue an agreement that would have avoided this disruption of service to our customers and Raycom viewers.”

“We understand this is frustrating for DISH Network customers, we share their frustration, and we are committed to doing everything we can to resolve this issue,” Raycom Media president and CEO Paul McTear said.

CBS and Time Warner are facing a Friday deadline in a similar dispute.

WLOX to Air CBS Programming on Digital Subchannel

WLOX, Raycom Media’s ABC-affiliate in Biloxi, will air CBS programming on a digital subchannel beginning April 8. The market currently does not have a CBS-affiliate.

In a statement, Raycom president and CEO Paul McTear said the new partnership “creates an unparalleled opportunity to expand and enhance the valuable service WLOX has provided its community since October 1962.”

The CBS programming will replace 24/7 weather programming on WLOX’s digital subchannel, according to the WLOX website. The station said that weather information, will be available online and on wireless devices, and will be broadcast on all WLOX channels during severe weather outbreaks. Read more

Raycom CEO Says $25M Drop in Tucson Advertising Is Behind KMSB-KOLD Shared Services Agreement

Raycom Media president and CEO Paul McTear says a steep decline in advertising revenue in the Tucson market is what spurred Belo to turn over KMSB‘s news operations to his company.

McTear told Inside Tucson Business this week that advertising revenue in Tucson has fallen by $25 million since 2007.  A smaller pie has forced Tucson stations to rethink their business models.

“If we don’t find different ways to run our business, we will have to shrink our operations and that means a dimunition of service to our viewers,” McTear said. Read more
